NAHUNTA — Mrs. Betty Sue Morris Wakefield, 95, passed away Monday evening, March 2, 2026, at Bayview Nursing Home in Nahunta.

She was born May 3, 1930, in Akron, Ohio, to the late Harvey and Susie Latham Morris. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Leon J. Wakefield, whom she was married to for 57 years.

They started pastoring a Church of God of Prophecy in Michigan, before moving to Georgia in 1960. They pastored together for 54 years at many southern churches. She was always by her husband’s side working in the church. She loved working with the children and visiting those in need. Betty belonged to the seniors’ club in Waycross, and she was a faithful member of Crossview Church of God of Prophecy. She was formerly employed by Wal-Mart and Dollar General.

She also was preceded in death by her son, David L. Wakefield; her sisters, Patsy M. Terrell, Donna M. Lee and Maxine Kellam; and brother, Harvey “Bucky” Morris, Jr.

Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia “Cindy” Myers (Larry) of Brunswick, and Deana Kay Hagan (Bruce) of Savannah; daughter-in-law, Martha Wakefield; six grandchildren, Chris Wakefield, Melissa Wakefield Terry, Caitlen Bunkley, Paul Alvarez, David Alvarez, and Milla Hagan; 10 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of Bayview Nursing Home and her church family for all their love and compassion given to Betty during her end of life transition.

A funeral service was held March 7 at Crossview Church of God of Prophecy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Church Congregation of your choice or the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
