MACON — Athletes who played at Waycross High School and at Ware County High School after consolidation are mourning the loss of their beloved coach.
E.B. Price passed away Monday, February 9 here at a senior citizen facility. Price coached football and basketball during his tenure at WHS before moving over the WCHS.
“Desire, determination, and discipline” was Price’s philsophy for basketball, school and life.
The long-time coach was hired in 1975 by legendary football coach Dale Williams. His Lady Bulldogs reached the Class AA state title game in 1976 and won the AA state title in 1978.
Price was a defensive coach on the 1977 and 1981 state championship football teams at Waycross. He also served as defensive coordinator at Ware County High School.
The Johnson County native, who earned All-Middle Georgia (First Team) honors in football and also competed in track, coached the Lady Bulldogs in 1976-82 winning five region titles compiling a 148-17 record.
After a two-year stint leading the Brantley County basketball programs, Price returned to Waycross High School in 1985 leading the Bulldogs to a state runner-up finish reaching the title game with a 29-0 record. WHS won five region titles before consolidation.
Price guided Ware County to its only “Final Four” appearance in 1999.
He retired from the Ware County school system in 2006 having accumulated more than 500 wins during his 35-year career. He was elected to the Ware County Hall of Fame in 2001.

He came out of retirement in 2016 to coach the Pierce County Bears for one season.
Three of his former players became head coaches — Tre Hill, Lisa Pollar and Keith Davis.
Price also umpired baseball and softball with the South Georgia Umpires Association.
