Eugene Franklin Thompson

RICHMOND HILL, Ga. — Mr. Eugene Franklin Thompson, 84, of Richmond Hill, Ga., died Wednesday morning, February 4, 2026, at his residence after an extended illness.

Thompson was born in Pierce County to the late Daley Lee Thompson and Valine McCarthy Thompson. He lived in Savannah for much of his life, before settling in Richmond Hill 32 years ago. He worked as a draftsman for Diamond Construction and as a transporter for the American Red Cross. He attended Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Waycross, and most recently was attending Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Screven.

A veteran of the United States Army, Thompson served his country during the Korean War. You could always find him whittling and sharpening knives. He stayed active as a Mason and Shriner.

Along with his parents, he also was preceded in death by his daughter, Eugenia Maxine James; four brothers, Daley Thompson, Jr., Artemus Lee Thompson, John Wayne Thompson, and Frederick Alvin Thompson; and one sister, Rose Marie Thompson.

wife, Maxine Thompson of Richmond Hill; three daughters, Lana O’Neal (Wayne) of Pooler, Ga., Dana Rodriguez (Johnny) of Midway, Ga., and Samantha Stewart (Kevin, Sr.) of Waycross; 11 grandchildren, Jason O’Neal, Brandon O’Neal, Dustin O’Neal (Stephanie), Shelby Johns, J.J. Roberts, Jessica Gomer, Ashton James (Bonnie), Kevin Stewart, Jr., (Kristin), Kayla Stewart (Vincent Dauro), Kelly Stewart, and Kyler Stewart; 25 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Carolyn Still (Frank) of Blackshear, and Diane Thompson of Brunswick; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A funeral service was held February 7 in the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel. A burial followed at Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
