Museum fundraiser celebrates school’s 100th anniversary of founding

Center High School celebrates the centennial anniversary of its opening this year at its annual Museum Banquet, at 6 p.m. March 14 at the Waycross Exchange Club, 2401 Knight Avenue.

The 16th annual banquet, sponsored by the Center High School Historical Committee, is themed, “Celebrating 100 Years of Excellence.”

Center High opened in 1925 for the education of black students and operated until its final graduating class in 1969.

Attendance at, or graduation from the school, is not required to attend the banquet. Tickets for the evening are $50 per person and available now from committee members or by calling (912) 283-4298.

Seats are not reserved, but if class members want to sit together it’s suggested they make reservations by March 1 by calling the aforementioned number. In addition to the dinner, the evening will include an address from 1957 Center High graduate Reginal Taylor. Also included will be numer-ous gifts and awards as well as other “surprises” and the awarding of several scholarships to graduating seniors who will attend college.

Taylor will be introduced by his brother, Henry Waddell Taylor, a member of the Class of 1961, which will be celebrating its 65th reunion.

Attire for the evening is “dressy” with no jeans or T-shirts. Attendees are encouraged to show their school spirit by mixing in Center’s colors of blue and gold in their outfits to honor the school’s founding 100 years ago.

The Center High School Museum, located in the Ware County Board of Education Building at 1301 Bailey Street, will be open from 10 a.m. to noon on banquet day.

Attendees are encouraged to make a visit to the museum part of their day.

Organizers look forward to providing a “Roaring Tiger Spirited Good Time” during the annual celebration.
