Volunteers repair SFW bridge

Special to the WJH

A walking bridge at Southern Forest World (SFW) damaged by Hurricane Helene has been fully restored thanks to the efforts of a Georgia Power volunteer team and donated building materials.

The bridge, an important feature used by visitors and school groups exploring the outdoors at SFW, sustained significant structural damage during the storm and was temporarily closed for safety reasons. Yellow caution tape surrounded the structure as staff awaited repairs.

The Georgia Power team arrived on site January 15 and completed the repairs, donating both the skilled labor and lumber needed to rebuild the bridge.

The crew replaced damaged decking and supports, ensuring the structure was safe and ready for public use once more.

It seemed to be the coldest day of the year, so the board of SFW provided snacks and hot chocolate to the workers.

The project was coordinated by the Board of Southern Forest World and Waycross Area Manager Brent James.

SFW officials expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the bridge is an essential part of the educational experience, allowing guests to safely navigate from the parking area to SFW.

“This was a true example of community partnership,” organizers said. “Georgia Power stepped up at a time when the facility needed help the most.”

With the repairs complete, SFW has reopened the bridge to visitors, restoring full access to its The SFW board says the repaired bridge serves as a reminder of the importance of community collaboration in recovery efforts following severe weather.
