Special to the WJH
Free tax return preparation is available at two locations in Waycross during the 2025 tax season through the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
The first is at the Ware County/ University of Georgia Extension office, 3225 Harris Road. The other is located at the office of the Ware County Board of Elections and Registration, 408 Tebeau Street.
The program, which is in its 24th year, serves individuals and families who generally earn $67,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and taxpayers with limited English proficiency.
VITA volunteer tax preparers are trained and certified to prepare many types of tax returns, including those claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Care Tax Credit. Volunteers are trained and certified by the IRS, and must pass annual exams to prepare returns.
Tax preparation volunteers from the community and Coastal Pines Technical College will be working with UGA Family and Consumer Sciences County Agent, Tabitha Kirkendall, at the extension office to provide the tax preparation service.
Appointments are required to access the service there by calling (912) 287-2456.
The VITA site at the Board of Elections and Registration Office is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday through the tax season.
Returns are handled on a firstcome, first-served basis. For information about that service, call (912) 287-4363.
