The Miracle League of Okefenokee has opened registration for baseball and cheerleading for ages 5 and up.
The Miracle League provides baseball and cheerleading programs for individuals with special needs and organizers say it is much more than just a game. Miracle League is about being a part of a team, connecting with others, building relationships, making friends and having a lot of fun.
Registration is now open online at miracleleagueokefenokee.com. Registration will close February 20. The registration fee is $20. Sponsorships and fee waivers are available and coupon codes can be found under the program details tab during registration.
If registered by the February 20 deadline, players will receive a baseball jersey and cap and cheerleaders receive a custom shirt and hair bow.
Spring games are held on Fridays at the Miracle League’s handicap accessible Field of Dreams located at the Trembling Earth Sports Complex in Waycross. The season opens March 20 and runs through May 8. The league plays one day each week. Games last approximately one hour. Game 1 begins 5:30 p.m. (Youth), Game 2 6:30 p.m., and Game 3 7:30 p.m. Each game lasts 2 innings. Cheerleaders report to the field 6 p.m. for practice and perform after the first game.
All players and cheerleaders are paired up with a buddy to assist them with whatever is needed be it help batting, pushing wheelchairs or going around the bases. Family members ages 12 and up may buddy with participants and are encouraged to volunteer. Every player scores a home run and each team wins. The date for a meet and greet event where players can pick up jerseys and meet their coaches will be announced on the Miracle League’s Facebook page prior to the first game. The end of season cookout and presentation of awards will be held at the last game.
