Elwell speaks on elder care

Ashley Elwell, Director of Abide Home Care and fellow Rotarian spoke to the Blackshear Rotary Club at a recent meeting. Elwell explained to the club the difference in home health and home care. Home health is medical care provided in the home by licensed professionals, usually RNs, LPNs, physical, occupational or speech therapists, etc.

They help with wound care, injections, IVs, medication management, therapy and monitoring serious health conditions. Home health requires a doctor’s order and is usually covered by insurance. Home care is a service to help clients with daily living and nonmedical treatment. This service is usually pro-vided by caregivers or personal care aides.

Home care agencies such as Abide help with meal prep, bathing, dressing, transportation to and from doctor’s appointments and helping with mobility or reminders. No doctor’s order is needed, but it is not covered by Medicare. This service can be short-term or longterm. Abide Home Care focuses on quality of life and independence.
