MT. JULIET, Tenn. — Kathryn L. Schmitt West passed away Sunday, January 18, 2026 surrounded by her family at the age of 69.
Mrs. West was a member of the Brantley County High School Class of 1974.
She is preceded in death by her pare nts, Richard Henry “Dick” and Iris (Sawyer) Schmitt; and husband, Thomas “Tom” West.
She is survived by her daughters, Lea Hill (Andy Hows), Kristina Cunningham (James Cartwright) and Casey Arnold (Josh); grandchildren, Zachary Cunningham (Leaha Corn), Victoria Lambert (Chase), Stephanie Huf-

County Board of Education for over a decade. He served as campaign chairman and a board member of the United Way. He was a trustee of the YWCA and worked on committees related to the construction of its new facilities. He served on the Board of Directors for the Salvation Army and the First National Bank of Brunswick.
Newton was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Preston Newton, in 2019, after a nearly 69-year marriage.
He is survived by three sons, Philip, Preston (Lynn) and Patrick (Lisa); grandchildren, Hank Newton, Catherine Gore (Will) and Alexandra Mc-Neal (Clint); and greatgrandchildren, Waylon, Blair and George.
A graveside service and interment will take place at a later date at Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville, Ga.

West faker (Morgan Williams), Kailyn Cunningham, Reagan Arnold and Claire Arnold; great grandchildren, Hunter Lambert and Waylon Lambert (due in May); siblings, Sylvia McHugh (Bob), Al Schmitt (Sherry), Andy Schmitt (Paula) and Marian Smith (Mitch); companion of two years, Dale Weiss; along with many other loving family and friends that became family.
Mrs. West was a labor and delivery nurse for over 40 years with 35 of those years spent at Baptist hospital/St. Thomas Midtown. She was very passionate about her job. Her most memorable events were having delivered all six of her grandchildren.
Mrs. West enjoyed quilting, sewing, golfing, the beach, which she called her happy place, working in her yard and with her flowers. She loved being a “Nana”, and spending time relaxing in her backyard by her pool known as “Nana’s Oasis”.
Mrs. West will be remembered as a great mother, nana, someone who would give you the clothing off her back, being a genuine loving person who always saw the good and positive in everyone. She especially loved Jesus.
A funeral service was held Thursday, January 22, 2026 at Sellars Funeral Home in Mt. Juliet, Tenn.
Interment followed at Mt. Juliet Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or The American Cancer Society.
