Heron grapplers 20th at tournament

LYONS — The Brantley County Herons wrestling program finished 20th here in the two-day, 33-team Chick-fil-a Sweet Onion Invitational traditional tournament hosted by Toombs County High School.

BCHS was led by the third-place finish of Ty Hughes (215 lbs.) and Dante Holbrook’s (113) sixth-place finish to total 59.5 points.

West Laurens (279) captured the team title. Rounding out the Top 10 were Dublin (211.5), Effingham County (178), Wayne County (161), Ware County (160). Lowndes (156.5), Lee County (149), Fitzgerald (115), Harlem (108.5) and Vidalia (104).

Placing 11-20 were Screven County (102), Wewahitchka, Fla. (98), Freeport, Fla. (97.5), Benedictine (97), host Toombs County (83.5), Bacon County (66.5), Burke County (66.5), Appling County (65), Berrien (64) and Brantley County (59.5).

The rest of the field included Statesboro (51), Treutlen (48), Northside (40), Liberty County (38.5), Jeff Davis (30.5), Bryan County (30), Calvary Day (28), Swainsboro (24), Dodge County (21), Metter (21), New Hampstead (21), Pinewood Christian (21) and Jones County (0).

Hughes posted a 4-1 mark winning three of his four matches by pin (24 seconds, 2:19, 1:10). The last victory was an 8-1 decision. Hughes’ loss was by pin (1:10).

Holbrook finished with a 3-3 mark. His three wins were via pin (2:21, 1:19, 3:21). He lost twice by pin (1:19, 4:45) and by technical fall (3:04).

Keller Stringer (106) posted a 3-2 mark with the losses a technical fall (20-3) and a major decision (17-6). Stringer’s three victories were by pins (1:26, 26 sec., 2:48).

Ryder Leveen (106) lost his two matches via pins (1:18, 2:38).

Steven Roberson (126) finished 22 with a forfeit and a pin (1:49). He lost by pinfall (3:27) and technical fall (23-5).

Sawyer Grimsley (132) lost both his matches via pin (5:57, 3:36).

Falcon Machado (144) went 1-2 with the victory coming via technical fall (23-8). He dropped a 5-4 decision and lost by pin (4:14).

J.T. Johns (150) went 0-2 losing a 14-11 decision and falling by pin (2:20).

Colton Green (157) fell twice via pin (54 sec., 59 sec.).

Wiley Ray (175) recorded a 1-2 slate with win coming by pin (3:10). He lost twice by pin (4:26, 1:03).

Steven Cook (285) also finished 1-2 recording a pin (5:22). He was beaten twice by pin (1:28, 4:27).
