WAYCROSS — James Holton Chancey, 86, of Waycross died Tuesday morning, January 20, 2026, at his residence after an extended illness.
Chancey was born in Waycross to the late Leon Cuyler Chancey and Stella White Chancey, and made Waycross his home for most of his life. He served his country faithfully in the United States Air Force and was an exceptional self-employed drywaller in the area. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and telling a good story, but most of all, he loved being with his family. Chancey was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Waycross.
In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a son, George Chancey; four siblings, D.J. Corbett, Coleman Chancey, Charles Chancey and Reba Jean Thompson.
Chancey is survived by his beloved wife, Marisa Chancey of Waycross; four children, Joe Chancey, wife Belinda, of Peachtree Corners, Ga., John Chancey, wife Ann, of Waycross, Javier Chancey, wife Sonia, of Kingsland and Sonya Peacock, partner Scott Patterson, of Statham, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Joshua Chancey wife Kate, Samantha Vandergriend, husband Derek, Chelsie Smith, husband Zack, Katelyn Chancey, Garrett Chancey, Zachary Chancey, Gable Peacock, and Layla Peacock; three great grandchildren, Cuyler Smith, Chancey Mae Smith, and Mills Smith; a brother, Chester Chancey of Waycross; along with numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A mass of resurrection was held January 23 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. A private burial was held in Oakland Cemetery.
