Grapplers fifth at 33-team tourney at Toombs

LYONS — Ware County’s wrestling program logged a fifth-place finish here in the two-day, 33-team Chick-fil-a Sweet Onion Invitational traditional tournament hosted by Toombs County High School.

The Gators, led by the first-place titles of Jaden McKelvin (144 lbs.) and Gunter Fore (165), totaled 160 points. West Laurens (279) captured the team title.

Finishing between the Raiders and Ware County were Dublin (211.5), Effingham County (178) and Wayne County (161). Lowndes (156.5), Lee County (149), Fitzgerald (115), Harlem (108.5) and Vidalia (104) rounded out the Top 10.

Placing 11-20 were Screven County (102), Wewahitchka, Fla. (98), Freeport, Fla. (97.5), Benedictine (97), host Toombs County (83.5), Bacon County (66.5), Burke County (66.5), Appling County (65), Berrien (64) and Brantley County (59.5).

The rest of the field included Statesboro (51), Treutlen (48), Northside (40), Liberty County (38.5), Jeff Davis (30.5), Bryan County (30), Calvary Day (28), Swainsboro (24), Dodge County (21), Metter (21), New Hampstead (21), Pinewood Christian (21) and Jones County (0).

McKelvin went 5-0 in winning his weight division. He won three matches by technical fall (18-2, 161, 19-2), posted a 13-8 decision and via pin (38 seconds).

Fore also went 5-0 pinning four opponents (1:11, 1:29, 2:52, 1:06) and posting a technical fall (21-5).

Aaron Bennett finished third in the 150-lb. weight class posting a 5-1 mark. He recorded four pins (39 sec., 1:04, 2:53, 1:41) to go along with a 14-11 decision. His loss was a 10-0 major decision.

Leve Moore placed fourth in the 120-lb. division going 5-2. Moore lost his opening match by pin (1:18) and last match by technical fall (20-5). In between he won three times via pin (1:31, 2:31, 3:54) and twice by technical fall (17-2, 16-0).

Damarion Zanders finished fifth in the 132-lb. weight class with a 52 mark. Four victories were by pin (1:06, 40 sec., 1:45, 2:11) the other by technical fall (17-2). He lost twice by pin (4:40, 1:06).

Ashton Cox (106) went 1-2 winning with a 14-second pin. He lost by pin (2:16) and major decision (16-3).

Cristian Martinez (106) also went 1-2 with the victory a technical fall (18-3). His losses were by pin (34 sec, 1:26).

Wesley Frye (138) finished 0-2 losing by technical fall (17-2) and pin (2:43).

Andy Ignacio (150) lost his two matches via pin (5:40, 2:42).

Maleek Mackey (157) posted a 2-2 record winning a decision (114) and recording a pin (3:10). He lost by pin 91:38) and decision (137).

Charles Sams (157) went 0-2 losing via pin (39 sec.) and forfeit.

Collin Deal (175) went 2-2 winning both matches by pins (1:22, 2:51). He dropped both matches by pins (1:31, 2:55).

Leland Nettles (175) lost twice via pins (47 sec. 39 sec.).

Kyler Matthews (285) posted a 3-2 mark with three pins (1:51, 55 sec., 4:18). He lost twice by pin (4:38, 4:18).
