James ‘Jimmy’ Thornton

James Allen “Jimmy” Thornton, 73, of Screven, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, January 21, 2026, at his residence, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born October 7, 1952, in Jesup, he was a son of the late Morris and Mary Murray Thornton. Living most of his life in Wayne County, he was a 1971 graduate of Wayne County High School and was a veteran, having served in the United States Air Force.
He had worked for CSX Transportation, was a heavy equipment operator in Brunswick and a truck driver for American Welding and Tank.
He was the pastor of Open Gate Ministries and had attended Providence Worship Center.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Cheryl Thornton, Screven; four children, Jennifer Rebecca Johnson (husband Chris), Reidsville, Jaime Marie Thornton, Brunswick, Aaron James Thornton (wife Bethany), Guyton and Miranda Lynn James (Jerry), Baxley; nine grandchildren, Chrissy Mobley (husband Sean), Rebecca Leigh Kirkland (husband Trey), David Larry Hallman (wife Courtney), Jesse Gage James, Sydney Yvonne McNeal, John Brint McNeal, Anniston Jade Thornton, Bayne Morris Thornton and Jaycee Leanne James; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Jerry Thornton (wife Kathleen), Bristol and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Visitation will be from 3-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at the funeral home.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, from the chapel of Hart Funeral Home.
