The Brantley County Board of Commissioners discussed/ voted on the following agenda items during the Tuesday, January 6 work session and the Thursday, January 8 regular monthly meeting.
• Public Hearing: The Brantley County Board of Commissioners held a public hearing January 6 at 5:40 p.m.
During the hearing commissioners heard a request for a Special Exception for Home Bakery located at 5179 Old Waynesville Road.
During the Thursday, January 8 regular meeting, commissioners approved a special exception Summer Ribron’s home bakery.
The board discussed an Road Abandonment application to abandon Forrest Thomas Lane in Nahunta.
During the Thursday regular meeting, commissioners approved the abandonment of Forrest Thomas Lane.
• Public Participation: County resident Sonny Reese addressed commissioners
• Trash Can Regulations: Sonny Reese requested commissioners review the certified letter he received from Brantley County Deputy Chris Edgerton, urging Reese’s neighbors to remove their trash cans from the shared space on his front lawn.
Reese explained there is no point to a certified letter if it cannot be enforced. He said, “Let (the attorney) put in the code to where it is enforceable and assign some penalties to people who refuse to obey.”
The board decided to move forward with this request, and discussed distributing a fine to citizens who do not follow the new code.
• Consideration of Tax Assessor Board Appointment: Commissioners approved Rose Bell to the Tax Assessor Board.
• Resolution for 2026 Election Qualifying Fees: Commissioners approved the resolution, adopting the 2026 election qualifying fees.
• Fencing quotes for new Annex Building: A motion carried to approve Troyer Specialty Fencing’s bid of $12,086 for gates and additional fencing around the new annex building.
T & T Fencing also submitted a bid for $14,510 and Gill Rowell submitted a bid for $15,295.
• Updated furniture price for Tax Annex Building: Commissioners approved the updated $28,749.37 quote for furnishing the new annex building.
County Manager Joey Cason explained he did not include the price of two doors in his original figure. The previously approved price was $28,170.75.
• Implementation of Four Emergency Traffic Usage Signs: The Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) granted Brantley County $148,207.92 for the purchase of four moveable emergency traffic message boards.
Commissioners approved acceptance of this grant with a federal share of $128,332.49, a state share of $5,703.66 and a local share of $8,555.50.
• PrimeSouth Bank Loan renewal: A motion carried to renew the Tax Anticipation Note with PrimeSouth Bank at a rate of 4.875%.
Interest earned from 2019 SPLOST will be applied toward the principal on this loan, which is approximately $100,000.
• Transfer of Satilla Plantation parcels: The board approved transfer of the Satilla Plantation parcels owned by Brantley County to the Brantley County Development Authority for the purpose of conveying the property to Skipper’s Bluff LLC.
The county manager informed commissioners local developer Scott Spires formally withdrew his request to be considered for the purchase of Satilla Plantation.
• Purchase of Ford F-150 for Public Works: Commissioners carried a motion to purchase a 2011 Ford F-150 for $11,599. The vehicle will be used to move the county’s mini excavator.
• County Manager report: Cason shared with the commission a need to discuss budget amendments during their February meeting.
He also shared the annual report from Brantley County’s Planning and Building Office, which showed it issued 341 building permits, 171 mobile home structure permits and 293 business licenses in 2025.
Total revenue in Brantley’s Planning and Building for 2025 was $371,842 and total expenses were approximately $162,000.
