Lady Herons win in OT thriller vs. Thomasville; Bulldogs rally in finale

CANEY BAY — Brantley County splitting a Region 1A doubleheader here Friday night against visiting Thomasville.

The Lady Herons (10-3 overall, 1-2 region) picked up their first region win surviving an overtime thriller in winning the opener 58-54 over the Lady Bulldogs (7-3, 0-2), who lost for the third time in four games after a 6-0 start to the season.

Thomasville (4-6, 2-0) rallied over the final 16 minutes to notch a 70-54 victory over the Herons (5-8, 12), who lost for the third time in four games.

Chloe Jones’ rare four-point play with 15 seconds to play in overtime gave BCHS the winning four-point margin in beating the Lady Bulldogs.

Brantley County got out of the gate quickly racing out to a 16-9 first quarter advantage. The Lady Herons stretched their margin to double-digits by intermission outscoring Thomasville 13-7 for a 29-16 lead.

The visitors knocked five points off the deficit during the third period outscoring Brantley County 15-10 to close the margin to 39-31. Thomasville outpointed the Lady Herons 21-13 in the final eight minutes to tie the score at 52-all.

BCHS outscored the Lady Bulldogs 6-2 in the extra session aided by Jones’ (nine points, five rebounds, four steals, two assists) game-winning three-point basket and free throw.

Abbie Lee’s (team-high six steals, assist) double-double of 13 points and 3 rebounds led three players in double figures. Julie Carter (seven rebounds, four assists, steal) and Tamiyah Coley (two rebounds, assist, steal) followed with 11 points and 10 points respectively.

Ella Highsmith (10 rebounds, assist, steal) bagged six points. Anniston Bowers (team-high five assists, two rebounds) netted five points. Kirsten Smith (rebound, assist, steal) added four points.

Thomasville overcame a onepoint halftime deficit outscoring the Herons by 17 points in the second half to get the win.

The Bulldogs drilled five of their nine three-point baskets during the second half rally.

BCHS opened the game outscoring the Bulldogs 19-11 in the first period. Thomasville responded with a 15-8 scoring advantage in the second stanza to pull to within 27-26 at halftime.

The visitors surpassed their first-half production doubling up the Herons 30-15 in grabbing a 5642 lead heading into the final period. The Bulldogs outscored Brantley County 14-12 in the fourth quarter.

Tallon Collins (rebound) scored 10 of his career-high 14 points in the second half to lead BCHS. Jayden Simmons (trey; team-high six rebounds, two assist, steal) netted eight of his 12 points in the first period. Cole Courson (four rebounds) bagged 11 points.

Hayze Evans (two treys; rebound) finished with six points. Nathan Howell (two assists) and Holton Depratter (two rebounds) each scored four points. Jayden Byron (five rebounds, two assists) and Sean Hutcheson contributed two points and one point respectively
