Pierce County Commission Highlights

(The Pierce County Board of Commissioners discussed and/or voted on the following during their regular meeting Tuesday, January 6. ) Waycross bypass: The proposed Waycross bypass remained a topic of intense public interest and debate. Blake Edwards, Aaron Jacobs, Jeremy Boyett, Marie Stonebreaker and John Wilson all signed up to speak on the proposed Waycross Bypass during public participation. (See related story).

County infrastructure: Public works superintendent Bruce Carter gave a presentation on a recently completed critical county infrastructure report on the county’s bridges and culverts.

Beaver report: Public works superintendent Bruce Carter gave an update on beavers in 2025.

Qualifying fees: Commissioners approved setting the qualifying fees for candidates in the May primary election.

Boys state recreation football champions: Members of the boys 8 and under football team were recognized as the Georgia Parks and Recreation Association (GRPA’s) state champions this fall. (See related photo).

Royal appointed: Commissioners voted to appoint Daniel Royal to represent Pierce County on the Region 9 EMS Advisory Council. He replaces former EMS Director Blake James who resigned to become executive director of the Development Authority.

Bell presentation: Stephanie Bell gave an update on the Area Agency on Aging and Community Needs and Youth Legacy Leadership. She spoke about the youth legacy leadership working with the lending libraries locally. Bell asked Senior Center Director Lynn Platt to speak on behalf of the seniors group. Platt asked commissioners to participate in a senior survey to assist with identifying and addressing needs for the county’s senior citizens.

County manager report: Interim County Manager Thomas Sauls was welcomed by the board in what was just his second day on the job. Sauls reviewed various statistics from county departments and told commissioners he has been busy familiarizing himself with county operations.

Employee of the Month: Leona Fox of Pierce County Emergency Medical Service was named employee of the month. (See related photo).

Pledge leader U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Benjamin Adams was the pledge leader for January. (See related photo).

Invocation leader: Pastor Jason Thomas, youth pastor at Remnant Church of God, led the invocation.

Next meeting: The next regular commission meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, February 3, at the Southeast Georgia Regional Agriculture Center in Blackshear.
