(The Pierce County Recreation Board discussed and/or voted on the following during their monthly meeting January 6.)
No quorum: Recreation board chairman Chris Wright and board member Brad Arington were the only members present for the meeting, so no official votes could be taken nor business could be transacted. Recreation Director Maureen Brown did give a report on the department’s activity over the past month.
Director’s report: Director Brown reported basketball season is now underway with over 230 kids participating. She noted the department has packed gyms for the game and expressed thanks to First Baptist Church of Blackshear for allowing use of their gym. “We badly need another gym,” the director said. She announced the Pierce County Recreation Department would be bidding to host recreation basketball district tournaments for 8u, 10u and 14u boys. Brown reported the 8u football team won the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) State Championship in December. (See related photo.) Brown also announced softball, baseball, soccer and track registration for spring sports is now open. The director also discussed plans for the proposed new recreation facility on County Farm Road and improvements to the Ware Street Complex.
Next meeting: The next monthly meeting will be held at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 4, 2026, at the Southeast Georgia Regional Agriculture Center (SEGARAC) on College Avenue.
