Bridge wreck injures Pierce woman

A Patterson woman was injured last week in a two-vehicle wreck on the Satilla River Bridge that snarled traffic in both directions of US 84 for more than two hours, the Georgia State Patrol said.

Holli Thomas, 46, was transported to Memorial Satilla Health by Ware County EMS for injuries suffered in the collision Monday, January 5. The driver of the other vehicle, Jacob Rewis, 25, of Hortense, was not injured, according to the report.

The 2:58 p.m. wreck occurred on the bridge at the entrance/exit of Rivers Sport Bar. The bridge is under renovation and reduced to only one lane in each direction.

According to a statement by Rewis in the report, a pickup truck was stopped in the eastbound lane attempting to turn left into the bar. Rewis, in a 1986 Peterbilt 359 dump truck, was also traveling in the eastbound lane of the two-lane bridge.

According to the report, Rewis attempted to avoid a collision by braking, began to skid and lost control of his vehicle, which began to rotate counter clockwise and into the west bound lane in front of Thomas. The Thomas vehicle struck the dump truck with its front.

After impact, the truck struck a guard rail with its front and came to an uncontrolled rest facing north while the Civic rotated counter clockwise and came to an uncontrolled stop in the west bound lane facing east.

GSP Cpl. Max Webb investigated the accident.
