Mayor heads Emancipation program

Special to the WJH

Bishop Dr. Michael-Angelo James delivered the keynote speech last week at the Liberty County Emancipation Proclamation Day service in Hinesville.

The Mayor of Waycross was the choice of the Emancipation Proclamation Committee for the noon address Thursday, January 1 at Pleasant Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church.

The theme of the program, “Standing on the Promises of God”’ reflects the community’s enduring faith, resilience, and commitment to justice, unity, and spiritual strength. The observance continues a long and honored Liberty County tradition that commemorates President Abraham Lincoln's signing of the Emancipation Proclamation and celebrates the ongoing journey toward freedom and equality. Bishop Dr. James is a respected civic leader, educator, and pastor known for his commitment to community advancement, spiritual formation, and generational leadership. He currently is in his second term as Mayor of Waycross, having been elected in 2019 and again in 2023.

The speaker has been Pastor of Emmanuel's International Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Waycross for more than three decades. He is a distinguished member of Marquis Who’s Who.
