Wayne County nets season sweep against Pierce County

JESUP — Homestanding Wayne County swept Pierce County in non-region action here Saturday.

The Lady Yellow Jackets (9-5), winners of three straight and six of their last seven, notched a 37-23 victory over the Lady Bears (3-8) in the January 3 opener to complete a season sweep. Wayne County recorded a 45-34 victory in the December 13 meeting in Bearville.

The Jackets (9-4) ended a three-game skid in the nightcap handing the Bears (3-8) a fifth consecutive setback with a 43-30 decision. The win gave Wayne County the season sweep after a 63-43 victory in the first meeting.

PCHS returns to Region 3-AA action Friday, January 9 traveling over to Adel to face Cook for the only game of the week. Pierce County will host Appling County Friday, January 16 and Tattnall County Saturday, January 17.

Host Wayne County prevailed in a defensive battle limiting the Lady Bears to just 10 points and three field goals through three quarters en route to the win.

The Lady Yellow Jackets doubled up PCHS 6-3 in the first period. Wayne County extended the margin to 10 points at intermission outscoring the Lady Bears 10-3 in the second stanza for a 166 half-time advantage.

A 10-4 scoring advantage in the third quarter gave Wayne County a 26-10 lead with eight minutes to play. PCHS surpassed its point total during a 13-11 scoring run in the final period for the final 37-23 margin.

Claire Murray (trey) topped the Lady Bears’ scoring column with a game-high tying 12 points. Madi McGatha (trey) and Isabella Marx canned five points and four points respectively Sahara Minott chipped in two points.

The Lady Yellow Jackets were paced by Mimi Everette’s gamehigh tying 12 points.

The Yellow Jackets outscored PCHS 29-10 over the middle two periods turning around a twopoint deficit for the victory.

Pierce County, which received contributions from nine players, led 9-7 after the opening eight minutes. The momentum shifted as the Yellow Jackets outscored PCHS 12-4 in the second period for a 19-13 halftime advantage.

Wayne County widened the margin to double digits by the end of the third quarter outscoring the Bears 17-6 for commanding 36-19 margin. PCHS outscored the Yellow Jackets 11-7 in the final stanza.

Jikeyse McGauley (two treys) led the Bears with six points. Jamil Strickland was next with five points. Nigel Brown, Chezz Armstrong and Chance Williams (trey) followed with four points apiece.

Shavez Warren, De-Monte Clark and D.J. Moody each bucketed two points. Amir McKenzie netted a free throw.

Wayne County’s Dwayne Smith copped game-high scoring honors with 14 points. Corde Scott contributed 13 points.
