PCHS JV Lady Bears turn back Wayne, JV Bears fall twice

Pierce County’s Lady Bears jayvee recorded the lone win in three games against Crisp County and Wayne County over weekend action.

The Lady Bears (3-1) held off the homestanding Lady Yellow Jackets 33-27 Saturday, January 3.

The Bears (1-5) fell 57-50 Friday, January 2 to the visiting Cougars. PCHS dropped a 63-27 decision Saturday against the Yellow Jackets.

BEARVILLE — Pierce County was unable to overcome an eight-point, first quarter deficit in falling to the Cougars.

Crisp County jetted out to a 22-14 lead by the end of the first period. The visitors outscored PCHS 14-13 in the second stanza to open up a 36-27 halftime advantage.

The Bears chipped one point from the margin in each of the final two quarters. PCHS outpointed the Cougars 14-13 in the third period to get to within 4941. Pierce County closed with a 9-8 scoring advantage in the final stanza.

Maverick Pitts (trey) and D.J. Moody paced the Bears with 16 points apiece. Will Higginson bagged six points.

Miles Pitts and Mason Hutherson each netted four points. Joe Jamison contributed three points with Noah Cochran canning a free throw.

Lady Bears.....................33 Wayne County................27 

JESUP — The Lady Bears pulled away from a 21-all tie entering the final period doubling up host Wayne County 12-6 for the victory.

The two teams battled to 7-all standoff through one period. The Lady Yellow Jackets used a 7-4 scoring advantage in the second quarter to build a 14-11 halftime cushion.

PCHS outpointed the home team 10-7 in the third stanza tying the game at 21-apiece.

Jose’ziah James netted a teamhigh 10 points to lead the Lady Bears. Azaela Mobley was next with seven points. Jesslyn Moore and Aubrey Williams bucketed six points each. Patience Smith and Kamil Strickland chipped in two points apiece.

Wayne County was led by the game-high 14 points of Dakota Armstrong.

Wayne County ..................63 Bears ................................27 JESUP — Wayne County used a 45-point first-half blitz to run past the Bears.

The Yellow Jackets used six treys and made 21-of-25 free throws to score 39 of their 63 points. Meanwhile, PCHS was 9of-20 from the charity stripe with no three-pointers for a 30-point difference.

Wayne County shot out to an 1811 first quarter advantage. The Yellow Jackets blew the game open in the second period outscoring Pierce County 27-8 for a comfortable 45-19 halftime lead.

A 7-5 scoring advantage in the third period for Wayne County increased the margin to 52-24. The Yellow Jackets closed with an 11-3 scoring advantage in the final stanza.

Moody led the Bears with seven points. Miles and Maverick Pitts each scored five points.

Higginson netted three points while Hutcherson, Cochran and Jamison each finished with two points. Damian Gomez converted a free throw.

The Yellow Jackets placed 12 players in the scoring column led by the 11 points of Nehemiah Thomas.
