Special to the WJH Ware County Sheriff Carl James is warning citizens a telephone scam is circulating in the area related to the Ware County Jail.
James said in a news release his office has been notified that someone pretending to be “the Captain of the Ware County Jail” is seeking money — usually between $200 and $600 — to get a loved one or friend who’s been jailed out while wearing an ankle monitor.
James said that isn’t the procedure the Ware County Jail uses to conduct releases. Jail personnel do not ask for money to be sent via third parties, such as prepaid credit cards bought at stores, etc. as payment for an inmate’s release.
If an inmate has a bond set by a judge, there is a bond process that has to be conducted in person by the person bonding someone out at the jail reception desk (912) 287-4325.
James reminded to not give these scammers any money, personal/financial information, etc.
If anyone needs to verify a family member or friend is in jail, they can call the jail for information at (912) 2874325. The number also should be called to verify the circumstances of a bond or release.
Anyone who receives a similar call is asked to call the WCSO at the above number.
