Special to the WJH
The Okefenokee Alliance for the Homeless (OATH) was among the recipients of 12,000 pairs of socks given on behalf of cotton farmers this Christmas season.
The donation was made by the Georgia Cotton Commision on behalf of Georgia’s 3,500 cotton farming families.
Farmers delivered socks to OATH and shelters in Albany, Cordele, Valdosta, Lafayette, Athens, Demorest, Macon, Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus and Savannah.
“We hope that the sock donations will bring a smile to people’s faces across the state and give them extra warmth for the winter months,” said Georgia Cotton Commission Chairman Bart Davis, a cotton farmer from Colquitt County. “Farmers understand the difficulty of hard times, and it’s important to help those going through struggles feel supported.”
The Georgia Cotton Commission is a producer-funded organization located in Perry, Ga. The Commission began in 1965.
Georgia cotton producers pay an assessment enabling the Commission to invest in programs of research, promotion, and education on behalf of all cotton producers of Georgia.
