The 2025 Year in Review begins with a wintery beginning and seems to be closing with mild, spring-like weather.
In between, there have been vehicle accidents with deaths, drug arrests, the controversial building of an Annex Building for the county, one city government raising its millage rate while two others used the rollback, state championship banners won, and 100-year celebrations by the City of Nahunta and Southeastern Bank.
January Hoboken approves $2 increase for trash pickup
HOBOKEN — Door-to-door trash pickup for city residents is rising two dollars a month after a vote and passage of the City of Hoboken city council.
The current rate of $17 will increase to $19 February 1, 2025 after a motion by Councilwoman Amy Lee and a second by Councilman Kenny Jordan during the Tuesday, January 7 monthly meeting. The motion passed unanimously.
Three Brantley schools tabbed ‘Distinguished’
NAHUNTA — Three Brantley County Schools have been recognized by the Georgia Department of Education as Title I Distinguished Schools.
The announcement honoring Waynesville Primary, Hoboken Elementary and Nahunta Elementary came Thursday, January 9 from the state education officials.
Rowland passes away just shy of 94th birthday
FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — Marshall Rowland, a pioneering country music broadcaster born January 23, 1931 in Brunswick and raised in Waynesville, passed away Saturday, January 11, 2025 in Fernandina Beach, Fla., less than two weeks shy of his 94th birthday.
Rowland learned from his early upbringing experiences to help build a successful life in the radio business with three country music stations.
Note of possible bomb at BCHS leads to scare
CANEY BAY — A note suggesting the potential of a bomb threat at Brantley County High School was discovered Friday by a student forcing swift action by adminstration and Brantley County Schools Police.
The January 17 incident was treated as a potential threat. The investigation and sweep of the building confirmed that there was no credible threat.
“We want to make it clear that Brantley County Schools will not tolerate any actions, comments, or threats that compromise the safety and well-being of our students and staff,” a release from the school system said.
Brantley Countians experience a ‘white out’ Children’s wishes for a white Christmas came 28 days late when Winter Storm Enzo blasted through southeast Georgia coating the area with sleet and snow.
Brantley County had not seen snow since January 2018. Snow flurries began around 6 p.m., Tuesday, January 21 and lasted through the early morning hours of Wednesday, January 22.
The plunge of Arctic air into the deep south brought rare snow and ice to the southeast dropping temperatures into the 20s and the windchill into the low teens.
The NWS’s official measured mark for snow listed Hoboken with 3.8 inches. The icy conditions, however, prompted Brantley County to enact a curfew at dark in an effort to keep drivers off the roads.
Six injured in three-car wreck at Knox Road
LULATON — A threecar wreck early Tuesday morning at Knox Road injured all three drivers and three passengers, according to a Georgia State Patrol report.
Trooper Chris Rigby worked the 6:03 a.m., January 28, 2025 collision on Georgia 520 intersected at Knox Road.
Jack Johnson, 30, of a Nahunta address was driving a 2000 GMC New Sierra north on Knox Road.
Kawanda Bolds, 50, of a Waycross address was driving a 2016 Nissan Altima east on Georgia 520 approaching Knox Road in the left lane.
Calvin Thomas, 62, of a Waycross address was driving a 1997 GMC Sierra C 1500 traveling east on Georgia 520 approaching Knox Road in the right lane.
Johnson failed to stop at the stop sign at Knox Road and Georgia 520 and entered the path of the Bolds’ vehicle setting off the chain of events.
Devine, Edwards grab individual wrestling titles
WARNER ROBINS — Brantley County’s Maggie Devine and Aurora Edwards grabbed gold with first-place finishes here Friday at the GHSA Area 1 girls’ Traditional tournament hosted by Houston County.
The individual titles helped the Lady Herons to a fifth-place finish in the 44-team event garnering 120 points.
Devine captured the 170-pound division while Edwards topped the 190lb. class to earn spots in the state Sectional tournament being held Friday, February 7 at Houston County.
February BCHS grapplers capture Area 3 Traditional title
HAZLEHURST — Brantley County’s grappling Herons captured the 11-team Class 1A Area 3 Traditional title here Saturday, February 1 at Jeff Davis High School.
BCHS’s Dallon Lowe (138 lbs.), a defending Class AA weight classification champion, and Payton Perez (175) grabbed individual titles. The two are part of 12 wrestlers who qualified for the Saturday, February 8 state Sectional B at Jeff Davis.
The 12 qualifiers helped Brantley County accumulate 229 points for the championship trophy.
Animal waste spillage causes ‘smelly’ issue
HOBOKEN — An Atkinson County company truck hauling animal waste spilled some of its contents down the length of Georgia Highway 121 and a small section of Georgia Highway 32.
The path of waste was from Hoboken to Bristol, including Main Street in Blackshear. The Monday morning, February 3 spillage causing a stinky, awful mess.
The driver said he was unaware of the spill and blamed a faulty latch on the truck as the reason for the mess.
City of Nahunta opts out of House Bill 581
NAHUNTA — City of Nahunta officials announced Monday they will opt out of House Bill 581.
The decision came during the February 3 monthly meeting ahead of the March 1 deadline. The City of Nahunta was joined a day later by the decision of the City of Hoboken council.
Opting out will help protect property owners from potential tax increases.
Hoboken council makes motion to opt out of HB581
HOBOKEN — Hoboken city officials learned opting in to House Bill 581 could reduce revenue while opting out allows the city government to control revenue during its Tuesday, February 4 monthly meeting.
“The local homestead exemption does not apply here within the City of Hoboken,” said City Attorney Adam Ferrell. “Therefore, if this law goes into effect, then it might result in reduced revenue for the City. This state homestead tax would apply countywide to include the City of Hoboken if you decide to opt in.
Devine, Edwards finish first at Class A Sectional
HAMILTON — Brantley County’s Maggie Devine and Aurora Edwards captured first-place medals Friday in the Class A wrestling Sectionals here Friday, February 8 at Harris County High School.
Devine (30-0) kept here unbeaten season intact winning the 170-pound weight class with three pins. Edwards surpassed the 30-win plateau with three victories in the 190lb. division.
They advance to the Class A finals being staged at the Macon Centreplex Thursday, February 13 and Friday, February 14 for Class A through Class 4A.
Eight Herons qualify for Class A wrestling finals
HAZLEHURST — Brantley County will send eight wrestlers to the Class A state finals this week in Macon led by Sectional champion Dallon Lowe.
The finals is being held at the Macon Centreplex Thursday, February 13 and Friday, February 14 for Class A through Class 4A.
The top eight grapplers in each weight class from the two Sectionals advanced to the championship.
Lowe, a Class AA state champion last year, captured the 138-pound weight class Saturday, February 8 here at Jeff Davis High School. He will be joined by Payton Perez (175 lbs.), who finished second.
Jonathon Westberry (132), a champion last year, placed third. Rylen Smith (150) finished fifth. Rylan Benton (120) was sixth. Aubrey Carter (285) carded a seventh-place showing. Keller Stringer (106) and Hayden Dearmond (190) earned eighth-place finishes.
County does not renew contract with Republic
NAHUNTA — Republic Services will not have its Solid Waste contract with Brantley County renewed, according to County Manager Joey Cason.
According to Cason, the county will soon begin sending RFQs (Request for Quotes) to replace Republic Services, whose contract expires May 1.
“We (commission) have notified Republic via certified mail we will not be renewing the agreement and we will be putting out a request for bid on garbage services,” Cason told commissioners during the Tuesday, February 4 meeting.
Two injured in Hwy. 32 wreck closing traffic
HORTENSE — Two of the three drivers involved in a crash Wednesday on Hwy. 32 were transported to hospitals.
The February 5, 2:15 p.m., accident happened on Hwy. 32 at its intersection with Cumberland Road, shutting down traffic until 6:30 p.m.
Breyana Bennett, 18 of Darien, was driving east in a 2000 Honda Accord. Tiffany Propes, 36 of Hortense, was also heading east in a 2013 Ford Explorer. Roy Merritt, 67 of Broxton, was traveling west in a 2019 freight liner.
According to the report of Georgia State Patrol Trooper Christopher Rigby, Propes had stopped and was yielding to traffic on Georgia 32 waiting to turn left onto Sawgrass Road. Bennett was trailing and following too closely. She swerved left striking the rear driver side bumper of Propes’ vehicle with the front passenger side bumper of the Honda Accord.
The Bennett vehicle was struck by the freightliner driven by Merritt on the driver’s side rear quarter panel with its front.
Supreme Court denies hearing permit challenge
ATLANTA — The Georgia Supreme Court has declined to hear a challenge by the Brantley County Commission to an Environmental Protection Division permit for a 122-acre landfill in Brantley County, upholding a low court decision finding the permit valid.
Brantley argued in motions at the Georgia Supreme Court that the permit application was not complete — and therefore not lawfully approved by the state EPD — because the application did not accurately describe the proposed location of the landfill as it was first filed showing the landfill on the north side of the highway.
Waynesville wildfire leaves path of destruction
WAYNESVILLE — A brush fire quickly spread Wednesday, February 12 into a wildfire destroying three homes, six cars and seven sheds/outbuildings in the area around Couper Road, Harrington Road and Tyson Road.
The wind-driven fire (wind speed of five mph, gusts up to 13 mph recorded by WeatherStem Waynesville), which started around 2:50 p.m., impacted approximately 8.36 acres.
Reports indicated an unidentified man lit a fire nearby, without a permit, while trying to clear land. It’s unclear whether he will be facing charges.
“This was its own monster,” said Andrew Altman.
Neighbor is a hero saving three from wildfire
WAYNESVILLE — Chester Kirby didn’t get up Wednesday morning, February 12, thinking he’d end the day a hero, but that’s what those in his Waynesville neighborhood are calling him — whether he wants to accept the distinction or not.
One of those is Pam Hughes, who shares a home with Robert Graham. It was their mobile home where Kirby became a hero.
Kirby carried Graham, a disabled man in a wheelchair, from the burning mobile home amid a brush fire that scorched more than eight acres while destroying a handful of structures and vehicles, Brantley County authorities said.
Waynesville man killed in crash involving log truck
BRUNSWICK — A Waycross man is facing several charges after a crash involving the log truck he was driving claimed the life of a Waynesville man Wednesday evening.
Wendall Monroe Lovell, 41, was the driver of the log truck, which was traveling east on U.S. Highway 17. The loaded truck overturned around 6:45 p.m., February 12 onto its passenger side and spilled logs onto the roadway, one of which landed on top of a Mitsubishi Outlander, driven by Joseph William Hickey, 33 of Waynesville.
Hickey died at the scene of the crash.
Lovell was originally charged with DUI by the Georgia State Patrol. Additional charges of Vehicular Homicide have been added.
Car chase into Brantley County ends tragically
HORTENSE — A Blackshear man reportedly led law enforcement officers on a two-county car chase ending in an apparent selfinflicted gun shot wound near Hortense Thursday night.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating the February 13 death of Corey Ray Beale, 33, of Blackshear, at the request of the Brantley County Sheriff’s Office following a traffic stop and chase which started along U.S. Highway 84 in Blackshear.
Hortense man sentenced in large trafficking case
BRUNSWICK — A Hortense man, the last of 76 defendants convicted of more than 250 felonies in a major south Georgia drug trafficking operation, has been sentenced to federal prison, wrapping up an investigation into a gang-coordinated conspiracy that operated inside and outside Georgia prisons.
David D. Young, a/k/a “Khaos,” 44, was sentenced to 235 months (19 years, seven months) in prison after pleading guilty to Conspiracy to Possess with Intent to Distribute, and to Distribute Methamphetamine, said Tara M. Lyons, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia.
Edwards fifth in weight class at state finals
MACON — Brantley County’s Aurora Edwards placed fifth here at the Macon Centreplex in the Girls’ All-Classification Traditional state wrestling tournament.
Edwards (190-lb. class) was one of two Lady Herons wrestling at the Thursday, February 13 and Friday, February 14 state tournament. Maggie Devine (170) entered unbeaten and ranked among the Top 15 wrestlers in the state for all weight classes.
Edwards finished the year with a 35-5 mark. Devine was 31-2 winning her first 31 matches.
Lowe, Westberry, Perez finish Top 5 at state tourney
MACON — Dalton Lowe, Jonathon Westberry and Payton Perez posted Top 5 finishes here at the Macon Centreplex in the Class A Traditional state wrestling championships.
The Thursday, February 13 and Friday, February 14 performances helped Brantley County to a 12thplace finish with 58 points in the standings with a field of 60 schools being represented.
Lowe, a Class AA state champion in 2024, finished second in the 138-lb. weight division. Westberry, also a Class AA state champion a year ago, placed fourth in the 132-lb. class. Perez finished fifth in the 175-lb. division.
BCHS retires Jaylin Williams’ No. 2 jersey
CANEY BAY — Brantley County High School honored alum Jaylin Williams Saturday, February 15, with a jersey retirement celebration.
Williams is currently a member of the Grand Rapids Gold, an affiliate of the Denver Nuggets. An alumni game featuring teams (Blue and White) wearing t-shirts with No. 2 on the back. Williams’ jersey was retired during halftime.
Strickland is STAR Student of Class of 2025
CANEY BAY — Brantley County senior Joshua Strickland has been named STAR (Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition) Student.
Strickland, the son of Tamara Strickland, scored 1,360 on the SAT, the highest among the 2025 graduating class. He plans to attend Valdosta State University to major in Computer Science with a minor in Music Theory.
Strickland chose Band Director Noah Jackson as his STAR Teacher. The STAR program honors Georgia’s highest-achieving high school seniors and the teachers most instrumental in their academic development.
Brantley man facing multiple charges in arrest
HOBOKEN — A Brantley County man is facing charges after a shooting at a house on Raybon Road West.
Josh Ammons, 50, reportedly fired 12 rounds at a residence Friday night, February 21 around 9:45 p.m., in the 8300 block of Raybon Rock Road.
Ammons was pulled over near the Friendly Express in Hoboken. Officers with the City of Hoboken and City of Nahunta aided Brantley County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
A search of Ammons’ vehicle reportedly found two guns and a pellet gun.
Ammons was charged with Aggravated Assault, Marijuana Possession Less Than 1 Oz., Speeding, Reckless Driving, Aggravated Assault, Possession of Firearm or Knife During Commission of or Attempt to Commit Certain Felonies and Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance.
Cities of Nahunta, Hoboken opt out of House Bill 581
The City of Hoboken and the City of Nahunta officially opted out of the statewide adjusted base year ad valorem homestead exemption, commonly referred to as House Bill 581 (HB 581).
The City of Hoboken council unanimously approved a motion Tuesday, February 25 following three public hearings. The City of Nahunta followed suit Wednesday, February 26.
Legislation allows local governments to remove themselves from the statewide exemption before March 1, 2025.
Yeomans named Freshman of Week for Peach Belt
AIKEN, S.C. – University of South Carolina at Aiken freshman Brody Yeomans received the Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week honor for the last week of February.
The Brantley County High School alum, an allstate player his senior campaign, is a native of Hoboken. He went 5-for-13 for the Pacers (11-7 overall, 3-0 conference) against Francis Marion and Claflin College.
Yeomans is the son of William and Britnee Davis.
March Concerned citizens question Solar officials
NAHUNTA — Concerns of hazardous materials, decommissioning and a 20year tax abatement were discussed during a called meeting Tuesday, March 4 in the County Commissioners building.
The commission held two public hearings March 4 for discussion of amending the Land Use Ordinance to add Solar Farm as a Special Exception and to discuss Agricultural Special Exception for a Solar Farm.
BrightNight wants to do business in Brantley County on approximately 2,500 acres between Hortense and Browntown on the north side of Hwy. 32 bordering the county line dividing Brantley County and Wayne County. The company already has committments for Wayne County and Long County.
County approves construction moratoriums
NAHUNTA — The Brantley County Commissioners approved a series of considerations involving construction during Thursday’s monthly meeting.
Commissioners approved two resolutions March 6 with the first being imposing a temporary moratorium on the acceptance or approval of applications for certain permits related to construction and development.
The second resolution approved was for non-single- family land distributing activities, construction activities, site development and other similar actions within Brantley County for a period of 90 day.
BCHS’s Crowley captures top HOSA honor
ATLANTA — Brantley County High School senior Thomas Crowley earned a spot to the HOSA International Leadership Conference after winning first-place at the state level.
Crowley received a gold medal in the Sports Medicine category at the 2025 HOSA State Leadership Conference, held Thursday thru Saturday, March 6-8. More than 5,000 students gathered in Atlanta to compete in various healthcare competitive events.
Herrin retires, Willliams named BCHS head coach
CANEY BAY — Brantley County alum Jamison Williams has been named as Brantley County High School’s new basketball coach.
The announcement was made Monday, March 11 by the Brantley County Board of Education. Williams succeeds his high school coach Tripp Herrin, who announced his retirement a couple of weeks back.
Herrin is a 1990 graduate of Brantley County High School. After graduating from college, he embarked on a 30-year career in the Brantley County School System. He coached basketball his final 29 years.
Storm brings strong, gusty winds to county
UNDATED — Most of southeast Georgia escaped damage from the weekend storm system passing through.
Brantley County, Ware County, and Pierce County were pelted with rain and strong, gusty winds late Saturday (March 15) and into Sunday (March 16) afternoon.
Brantley County Sheriff Len Davis said he had heard reports that up to four inches of rain fell across the county.
Citizens show up to honor retiring Vance Wilson
NAHUNTA — Many residents of Nahunta showed up to drive their vehicles past Brantley Auto Parts Saturday, March 15 in salute of the retirement of Vance Wilson.
Wilson is retiring from the parts industry after beginning his career back in June of 1978 when Brantley Auto Parts/Pronto Auto Parts opened.
“I know I’m going to miss my customers,” Wilson said. “I thank them for being loyal over the years.”
Long-time BOE member Carter passes at age 80
NAHUNTA — Read Carter devoted over four decades of his life to educating Brantley County’s school children.
Carter, former assistant superintendent of Brantley County Schools, passed away Wednesday morning, March 19, at his residence, following an extended illness. He was 80.
“Mr. Carter was dedicated to our students and to his work,” said School Superintendent Dr. Kim Morgan.
NPD takes in two after traffic stop for drug possession
NAHUNTA — A man and woman were arrested Sunday, March 23 following a traffic stop and each charged with Possession of Methamphetamine.
Charles Mandon Highsmith, 47, of Nahunta and Danielle Nichole Capps were each arrested without incident and charged with Possession of Methamphetamine. Capps was also charged with Possession of Drug-Related Objects.
A Nahunta Police Department Crime Suppression Intelligence Unit (CSIU) K-9 officer conducted a traffic stop March 23 in the Circle K parking lot for a traffic violation at approximately 5:28 p.m.
BCHS Jr. Forestry CDE team wins state FFA title
COVINGTON — Brantley County High School’s Junior Forestry CDE team topped the field Saturday, March 22 to win firstplace.
The team consists of Brayden Lee, Jalen Crawford, Seth Thomas and Briar Cothern. The Senior Forestry CDE team finished third.
County manager discusses cost of Annex Building
NAHUNTA — The once projected number of $3.8 million to build the Brantley County Tax Office Annex Building is currently down to $3.4 million.
The nearly $400,000 difference could be more by the time the project finishes, according to County Manager Joey Cason during a March 24 interview.
Many of the line item costs in the project spearheaded by Allstate Construction Group Inc., to build the 7,056-square foot building are projected over a 12-month period. Others will be sub-contracted out.
Officer Todd, K-9 Quick earn certification
NAHUNTA — Nahunta Police Department Officer Brandon Todd and K9 Quick from the CSU K-9 Unit successfully completed a rigorous 60hour International K-9 Certification course.
This prestigious training, hosted by the St. Marys Police Department, tested the team’s proficiency in narcoticsrelated searches to ensure they meet the highest standards in detecting and identifying illegal substances.
“This course is invaluable in strengthening our department’s ability to successfully prosecute drug-related offenses,” said Chief Brad Todd. “It serves as a demonstration to the courts that our K-9 team is highly proficient in narcotics detection and ensuring our officers are equipped with the necessary skills to keep drugs off our streets.”
CSX train spark ignites fire burning 34 acres
SCHLATTERVILLE — A fire caused by a locked brake on a CSX train burned approximately 34 acres of wooded area at the Ware County-Brantley County line along Hwy. 82 late Friday afternoon.
There were no structures lost to the fire.
Sparks from the eastbound locomotive caused several wildfires March 28 stretching from Blount Road to Dixon Road north of the east-west track line. Wind and above normal fire conditions pushed flames northerly towards Central Avenue.
There were also some flames running on the southside of the tracks up near Hwy. 82.

Mercier was ‘heart and soul’ of Jr. Police Academy
NAHUNTA — “He was the heart and sole behind the Junior Police Academy.”
Brantley County Sheriff Len Davis gives Deputy Mike Mercier, who passed away Saturday, March 29, 2025, all the credit for the success of the annual Junior Police Academy held each year after school is dismissed for the summer.
The summer academy for youth started under former Sheriff Robert Thomas.
Mercier, who served his community for 45 years as a deputy with the Brantley County Sheriff’s Office, passed away at Satilla Hospice House in Waycross following an extended illness.
Williams inks deal to play in Canadian league
WINNIPEG, Manitoba — The Winnipeg Sea Bears of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced they have signed power forward Jaylin Williams for the 2025 season.
Williams, 24, joins the Sea Bears after a standout career at Auburn University and a productive 202425 season in the NBA G League with the Grand Rapids Gold and NBA Summer League.
“I’m excited to join Winnipeg for the 2025 season,” said Williams. “I’m ready to take my game to the next level with this talented team.”
April Tragedy strikes Hortense comm. with train wreck
HORTENSE — Two Hortense women, a mother and daughter, were killed Tuesday, April 1 when their car struck a northbound Amtrak train.
Marjorie Joanne Moore, 81, and her daughter, Joy Renee Moore, 52, died after the vehicle they were riding in, a 2010 Toyota Camry, hit the Amtrak train at the railroad crossing at Hwy. 32 and Screven Road.
Georgia State Patrol Trooper Chris Rigby investigated the 8 p.m. accident. According to Rigby’s report, the Moores were eastbound on Hwy. 32. The crossing signal was activated with the red flashing light and the crossing arm was down as the Amtrak train passed northbound towards Jesup.
Groundbreaking held for new Annex Building
NAHUNTA — Ground was official broken Thursday morning, April 3 for the new $3.4 million, 7,056square foot Brantley County Tax Office Annex Building.
The facility will house the Tax Commissioner’s Office, Tax Assessor’s Office, Planning & Building Office and E-911 Dispatch. County officials offered a big Thank You to Allstate Construction and Studio 8 Design for their dedication to bringing this project to life.
Nahunta amends municipal court Section 5-113 fees
NAHUNTA — The City of Nahunta approved amending its code to include fees for municipal court during its monthly meeting.
Amended during the Monday, April 7 meeting was Section 5-113 to include an administrative fee, failure to appear fee and technology fee after a second reading. The amended version was read during the Monday, March 3 council meeting.
Old rec. dept. facility named John Wilson Park
NAHUNTA — Brantley County’s former recreation department facility has a new name — John Wilson Park — with the unveiling of the name and a ribbon cutting ceremony held Friday, April 4.
Family members and friends were on hand to witness the April 4 event. The park sits adjacent to the Brantley County Sheriff’s Office.
Wilson was chairman (1977-80) of the Brantley County Commission passing away January 22, 1980. He also served in many roles during a 32-year political career.
NPD traffic stop leads to arrest of murder suspect
NAHUNTA – A Waycross man wanted in Brooks County was taken into custody by the Nahunta Police Department’s Crime Suppression and Intelligence Unit following a traffic stop early Thursday morning.
Willie Daquan Edwards, age unknown, of a Garlington Street address in Waycross, the driver of the Chevrolet Equinox, was wanted for murder, home invasion and two counts of party to a crime in Quitman, Ga.
Investigator Larry Champion with the CSIU conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle for speeding at approximately 1:30 a.m., April 10. A 9mm handgun was also recovered from the vehicle during the search.
OM Food Mart issued citations by Ga. Lottery
NAHUNTA — A local business was issued citations and appearance summonses from agents with the Georgia Lottery Corporation and the Nahunta Police Department.
SHRI LALITA TRIPURA, LLC, doing business as OM Food Mart, located in Nahunta at 9757 Main Street South, was served papers Monday, April 7, 2025 for violations of Georgia’s gambling laws.

BCHS netters earn top seeds in Class A tourney
VALDOSTA — Brantley County’s dominance on the tennis courts continued last week with the Lady Herons, winners of the 2024 Class AA state title, capturing the Region 1A DI title Wednesday, April 16 here at McKey Park for their fifth title since 2017.
They beat Jeff Davis in the finals.
The Herons picked up their fifth consecutive region title Tuesday, April 15 and 12th in the past 15 seasons turning back Jeff Davis. Both teams earned top seeds in their respective state tournaments and would host through to the semifinals.
The finals are set for Saturday, May 10 at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College.
Heron grapplers Lowe, Westberry ink scholarships
CANEY BAY — Brantley County senior wrestlers Dallon Lowe and Jonathan Westberry will continue their wrestling careers signing with Life University in Marietta.
The Running Eagles just completed a runner-up finish early in March at the 2025 NAIA national championship held in Wichita, Kan. They claimed the NCWA (National Collegiate Wrestling Association) title a week later in Baton Rouge, La.
Both grapplers won Class AA state titles in their respective weight divisions in 2024.
Four injured in ATV-car accident along Hwy. 32
HORTENSE — Four people were injured with two teenagers being lifeflighted to hospitals.
The accident involving a Honda Foreman 500 ATV and a 2022 Nissan Versa ocurred Saturday night, April 26 on Georgia Hwy. 32 at approximately 7:37 p.m.
According to the accident report of Georgia State Patrol Trooper Austin Edwards, the ATV was driven by a 16-year-old juvenile driver with a 17year-old passenger on board. Both were air-lifted to a hospital in Jacksonville, Fla.
The driver of 2022 Nissan Versa, Penny Schulze of Patterson, was transported to Memorial Satilla Hospital in Waycross.
Proposed City of Nahunta budget is largest ever
NAHUNTA — The City of Nahunta could be operating under its largest budget ever.
City leaders gathered Tuesday, April 29 to finish up talks with both the Water and Sewer proposed budgets totaling $1,235,881. Added to the proposed General Fund budget of $1,546,720, the City’s proposed Fiscal Year 2025-26 budget totals $2,782,601.
City Clerk Angie Wirth informed the council there has to be separate budgets for the Water Department and Sewer Department, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
May Calvert retires after 35 years of service with USPS
NAHUNTA — Faith Calvert was honored last week on her retirement after 35 years of service with the United States Postal Service (USPS).
Calvert was treated to a reception in her honor to mark the occasion.
“I have been so fortunate to have had so many great experiences with the postal service, but these last years here in Brantley County have been the greatest rewards,” said Calvert.
Calvert came to the area in 2020. She began working as a postal window clerk in Waynesville and shortly afterwards transferred to the Nahunta Post Office. The Hoboken and Hortense post offices are under Nahunta’s supervision and Calvert filled in at all three offices during her five years here.
City of Nahunta adopts modified water/sewer fees
NAHUNTA — City of Nahunta officials adopted modified fees for water/sewer services along with new permit fees and business license fees during their monthly May meeting.
Mayor Pro-tem Bruce Davis made the motion to approve the new schedule of fees during the Monday, May 5 meeting. Councilman Andrew Altman seconded the motion, which was passed by a 4-0 vote.
Residents with a late fee will be charged 10 percent of the bill. There is a $50 reconnection fee from 8 a.m.3:30 p.m., and $75 after 3:30 p.m. Residents will be charged a returned check fee of $35.
There is a $100 service deposit for water and a $100 service deposit for sewer.
Prius hits semi causing fire at Post Rd./U.S. 82
WAYNESVILLE — The drivers of a Prius and a semi are “lucky to be alive” after the two collided at the intersection of Post Road with U.S. Hwy. 82 Tuesday, May 6.
According to reports, the 76-year-old driver of the Prius pulled out in front of the eastbound semi striking the gas tank and clipping an air hose. The semi became fully engulfed with metal melting into the asphalt.
The semi was carrying two skid steers in a trailer. Only the frame of both the semi and trailer were left. The Georgia State Patrol Brunswick office was in charge of the accident.
BCHS’s Medcalf selected for OREMC youthtour
NAHUNTA — Brantley County High School’s Troy Medcalf was recently named one of four delegates for the annual Okefenoke REMC Youth Tour in June.
OREMC recently held its 32nd annual Youth Awards Banquet to announce its 2025 OREMC Scholarship winners, Walter Harrison Scholarship recipient and four Youth Tour Delegates.
Joining Medcalf are Brunswick High School’s Micaela Vazquez, Charlton County’s Emory Popham and Hilliard Middle Senior High School’s Emma Dillard.
BCHS Herons win first-ever state tennis title
CANEY BAY — Brantley County finally kicked through the championship door surviving against third-seed Bleckley County to claim its first-ever state championship trophy Saturday, May 17 winning 30.
“The day was stressful,” said head coach Patrick Stieve. “There were a lot of nerves coming from our players with the pressure of being the No. 1 seed, hosting every round of the state tournament and now the state championship.
“We knew there was a target on our backs. From the moment each team arrived, there was a different feeling.”
Lady Herons record second straight crown
CANEY BAY — Brantley County’s No. 1 seed Lady Herons captured their second straight GHSA state tennis title here Saturday, May 17 rallying to beat seventh- seed Region 1 foe Jeff Davis 3-2 for the Class A Division 1 crown.
“After winning the boys’ championship and celebration, we as coaches had to reset and refocus in getting the girls ready to face a familiar foe,” said head coach Patrick Stieve.
The victory gave Brantley County High School a sweep of the tennis titles, a feat accomplished 43 previous times (32 by private schools) since GHSA formated to team tennis in 1995.
Smoking AC unit delays Honors Night by 30 min.
CANEY BAY — Brantley County High School’s Class of 2025 was honored for its academic success during Honors Night five days before graduation.
The Monday, May 19 event, however, was delayed approximately 30 minutes when a power supply issue short-circuited an air conditioning unit atop the school’s cafeteria causing smoke.
Once the event began around 7 p.m., things went smoothly for the students, their families and friends.
Three killed in head-on collision in Schlatterville
SCHLATTERVILLE — Three people were killed and another was transported for injuries suffered after two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision.
Georgia State Patrol Trooper First Class Three Chase Middleton was the first trooper on scene of the Monday, May 19, three-vehicle crash involving a Ford F-150 pickup, a Ford Taurus and a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV — semi) on State Route 520 near High Bluff Road in western Brantley County.
Dickson Isaac Corbett, Sr., 93, of a Waycross address, Michael Daniel Byrd, 20, and his 19-year-old passenger and best friend Donavan Spears, died from injuries suffered in the wrong-way collision. Byrd and Spears were Class of 2024 Ware County High School graduates.
Devine, Winder to lead Class of 2025 seniors
CANEY BAY — Brantley County High School seniors Margaret Clare Devine and Greyson Cole Winder will lead the Brantley County High School Class of 2025 graduating class as Valedictorian and Salutatorian during the Friday, May 23 ceremony.
There are 53 Honor graduates and 183 total graduates who will receive their diploma.
Class of 2026 receives diplomas at ceremony
CANEY BAY — Family, friends and neighbors gathered Friday night, May 23 packing Heron Stadium as the Brantley County High School Class of 2025 received their long-awaited high school diploma.
Honor graduates were recognized Monday, May 19 during Honor’s Night.
JROTC members stood with arms outstretched, holding their polished swords together to serve as an arch for seniors to take the final steps before becoming BCHS alums.
BOE releases tentative budget first for FY26
NAHUNTA — Brantley County’s Board of Education released tentative FY2026 budget figures during a called meeting Thursday, May 28.
The $41,148,172 proposal is the highest ever surpassing the FY25 budget of $39,784,179 by $1,363,993. Since 2022, the budget has increased from $33,078,961 by $8,069,211.
“We are always anticipating what our allotment will be from QBE (Quality Basic Education),” said Superintendent Dr. Kim Morgan. “This year it came in at $32,355,330 and that does include the equalization amount ($5,812,978) as well. We’re actually down ($913,306 from $6,726,284) a tad there.”
Minnesota teen clocked at 134 by BCSO deputy
NAHUNTA — A Minnesota teen is facing four charges after being clocked at 134 mph on his motorcycle.
Mitchel Crews Rateliff (6-foot-4, 195 lbs.), 19 of Lakeville, Minn., was driving an unidentified motorcycle west on Hwy. 82 Saturday afternoon, May 31 at a high rate of speed.
Brantley County Deputy Conner Steedley clocked Rateliff at 134 mph. Rateliff, a cop in the Air Force, was charged with Speeding in Excess of Maximum Limits (State Speed and Zone Limits), Reckless Driving, Missing/ Defaced/Obscured License Plate and Unlawful to Possess, Display, or Use Any False, Altered Identification Document.
June Commissioners amend ordinance for sub-divisions
NAHUNTA — The Brantley County Commission has amended its Sub-division Ordinance forcing developers to pave all roads of 25 acres or less.
County Manager Joey Cason presented a resolution to amend the current ordinance, Section 602.3 of the Sub-division Regulations and delete Section 902 Sub-division Regulations, during the Tuesday, June 3 work session. Commissioners approved the amended resolution during the Thursday, June 5 monthly meeting putting it into effect immediately.
According to the resolution, lots of 25 acres or less shall not be improved unless all proposed streets are paved in accordance with the paving standards set forth in this ordinance.
Unpaved streets, whether proposed for private maintenance or public dedication, shall not be permitted in any subdivision approved on or after June 5, 2025.
BrightNight asks for more time on abatement request
NAHUNTA — Brantley County’s Board of Commissioners will now await a fifth proposal for a tax abatement concerning a proposed 2,500-acre solar farm site along Hwy. 32 between Hortense and Browntown.
Vice President of Development Greg Vander Kamp made the announcement “we have decided to table our request for a tax abatement until we have a better indication of project cost and our minimal abatement needs” to county commissioners during the Tuesday, May 3 work session.
The upcoming proposal for the Pepper Hammock Renewable Power Project follows four previous 20year tax abatement proposals with varying splits.
BCHS alum named member of USA SUP team
OCEANSIDE, Cal. — Brantley County High School alum Jason Latham is living his dream.
The 2007 graduate recently won a silver medal at the USA National Championships in Oceanside, Cal., earning a spot on the USA SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) Team.
Latham, who grew up in Nahunta and went to Brantley County High School, was introduced to surfing by his dad and uncle.
Developers present ideas to BC Dev. Authority
NAHUNTA — Three developers, two working together as a team, presented their ideas of developing property for the Satilla Plantation project.
Scott Spires, a contractor from Pierce County who has built apartment complexes and houses in Brantley County, was joined by the team of Roger McCants of Speedy Tostensen of Brunswick at the called Wednesday, June 18 meeting of the Brantley County Development Authority Board of Directors meeting.
The board convened to hear the ideas of how each would develop the property within Satilla Plantation and other areas, including Satilla Pastures, Pine Crest and Eagles Crest.
Savannah man arrested after drugs found
NAHUNTA — A Savannah man stopped for an expired tag violation by the Nahunta Police Department was arrested and charged with an additional four drug-related violations.
Christopher Tibbetts, 49, of Savannah, was stopped while traveling in his 2011 Chevrolet Impala at approximately 12:51 p.m., Tuesday, June 18, 2025, by Detective Jordan Melton with the Nahunta Police Department’s Crime Suppression and Intelligence Unit (CSIU).
The 2011 Chevrolet Impala, traveling within the city limits of Nahunta, had an expired tag.
23rd annual Jr. Police Academy graduates 33
NAHUNTA — The 23rd annual Jr. Police Academy held its graduation Friday, June 20 at Brantley County Middle School with 33 cadets receiving their diplomas.
Kingsland Chief of Police Ricky Evans served as the guest speaker for the ceremony.
Special recognition was given to the Mike Mercier, who passed Saturday, March 29.
Single-engine private plate engulfed in fire
LULATON — The quick reaction of a pilot, who’s single engine plane caught fire, saved another plane from the same fate Wednesday morning.
The pilot of the Cessna 182 single-engine aircraft, Donald Willis of Brunswick, was able to evacuate after hearing a loud noise and noticed flames near the aircraft’s rudder pedals during his approximately 10 a.m., departure June 25 from the Brantley County Airport for a flight to Dublin, Ga.
Willis moved a nearby plane out of harm’s way preventing further damage.

July Commissioners approve Britt Still Road project
NAHUNTA — County commissioners approved a curb and gutter option for the Britt Still Road road project during Thursday’s monthly meeting.
The decision followed Tuesday night’s (July 1) work session appearance and explanation by Ben Pierce, Director of Transportation at GWES LLC., of a curb and gutter appeal vs. a regular roadway design.
The $525,000 cost for the project will come from the current SPLOST (Special Local Option Sales Tax), according to County Manager Joey Cason
Two from out of town arrested on consecutive days
NAHUNTA — The Nahunta Police Department’s Crime Suppression & Intelligence Unit made two arrests following traffic stops for speeding.
Willie Vascal Mosley of Fort White, Fla., was taken into custody Thursday, July 3 and charged with Possession of Cocaine, Open Container of Alcohol and Obstruction of Law Enforcement.
Michael Muhammad, 52, of Brunswick, a convicted felon who had previously served time in a federal correctional facility, was arrested and charged with Speeding, Possession of Drug-Related Objects and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
Concerned citizen call leads to NPD arresting three
NAHUNTA — Three people were arrested Friday, July 11 following a tip from a concerned citizen reporting suspicious activity at the corner of Main Street and James Street.
Kenneth Wayne Crews, 58, of Nahunta, Travis Edward Sweat, 29, of Nahunta and Chelsie Lynn Willis, 36, of Nahunta were taken into custody.
“This is a prime example of how law enforcement and the community can work together to make a difference,” said Nahunta Police Chief Brad Todd.

HORTENSE — Brantley Animal Rescue Coalition announced the opening of a new dog boarding kennel — BARC Bed and Bath — at 500 Happy Hollow, Hortense.
Lois Vassilion, head of BARC Rescue. said the new 920-square foot facility, which will house 20 animals, is offering reasonable rates with top of the line quality care for fur babies, which has always been our specialty.
Former mayors kick off 100-year celebration
NAHUNTA — Two former mayors for the City of Nahunta and the current mayor spoke kicking off a week-long Centennial celebration Monday night.
Former Mayors Jeffrey Lee and Barbara Mayfield, along with current Mayor Marty Lee talked during the July 21 opening ceremony at City Hall, which began at 6 p.m.
The eight-day celebration culminates Monday, July 28 with a closing ceremony starting at 6 p.m.
NPD arrests two for drugs during traffic stop
NAHUNTA – Two people were arrested Thursday, July 17 by the Nahunta Police Department’s Crime Suppression and Intelligence Unit (CSIU) K-9 Division following a traffic stop for equipment violations.
A CSIU K-9 Detective conducted a traffic stop at 6 p.m., on a vehicle for an equipment violation. During a consent search of the vehicle, methamphetamine was discovered in the possession of the two rear passengers.
The individuals, identified as Marcus Dean Travis II, 42, and Georgia Nicole Turner, 37, both of Hortense, were taken into custody without incident.
Nahunta man nabbed by NPD after foot chase
NAHUNTA — A Nahunta man was arrested following a Thursday, July 17 traffic stop.
At approximately 9:45 p.m., the CSIU K-9 Unit stopped a pickup truck at approximately 9:45 p.m., for an equipment violation. During the stop, the detective detected the odor of marijuana.
The detective asked the driver, John Paul Branham, 31, of Nahunta, to exit the vehicle. Branham refused to comply with verbal commands, prompting the deployment of a department-issued Taser. A foot pursuit ensued, during which Branham attempted to discard marijuana while fleeing. A subsequent search revealed methamphetamine concealed inside Branham’s shoes.
Brantley man dies from injuries of being hit by car
NAHUNTA — A Brantley County man succumbed to injuries suffered after being hit by a vehicle.
Jamar Davis, 23, was struck Sunday, July 20 at approximately 11:36 p.m., as he walked along State Route 99 in Glynn County near Cabbage Bluff Road, according to the unfinished Georgia State Patrol’s Brunswick post report of the incident.
Davis died Tuesday, July 22 from his injuries at Shands Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla.
City of Nahunta presents keys to alum, netters
NAHUNTA — The City of Nahunta wrapped up eight days of celebrating 100 years Monday, July 28 with a closing ceremony.
A large crowd attended the momentous occasion. The City recognized BCHS alum Jaylin Williams, who is currently playing in the NBA Summer League with the Dallas Mavericks, with a Key to the City.
Also, the Brantley County High School’s 2025 Class A DI state champion Lady Herons and Herons tennis programs were each presented a Key to the City.
Carbon storage potential found in Brantley Co. soil
ATLANTA — Georgia Power’s deep drilling of a mile or more into Brantley County and Wayne County soil found some answers they were looking for.
The unannounced exploratory drilling by the power utility giant was for contractors to see whether formations below ground level are suitable for “geologic carbon sequestration,” a method that could permanently lock away the company’s greenhouse gas emissions.
August Local legend medals during Senior Olympics
ATKINSON — Local Senior Olympic legend Earl Burch captured another medal at the National Senior Olympics presented by Humana held in Des Moines, Iowa.
The gathering of more than 12,000 athletes age 50-and-above was held July 24 through August 4.
The 90-year-old Burch competed in the 90-94 age division in the shot put and hammer throw.
Hoboken council approves fencing at city cemetary
HOBOKEN — The City of Hoboken approved the placement of a fence at the city’s cemetary for the protection of graves and headstones.
The 3-2 decision with one council member abstaining came during the Tuesday, August 5 meeting inside City Hall.
NPD’s CSIU makes arrests in separate incidents
NAHUNTA – Nahunta Police Department’s Crime Suppression & Intelligence Unit arrested two people over the weekend resulting in the removal of two male offenders in the community.
Danny Lee Creamer, 53, of Patterson, was arrested Saturday, August 9 following an approximately 10:30 p.m. traffic stop on U.S. Highway 301 near McKinney Medical for an equipment violation. He was taken into custody without incident and charged with Possession of Methamphetamine.
Sandy Ozell Chester, 55, of Nahunta, was apprehended after Officer Jeff Sturgill responded to a residence on Florida Avenue at approximately 10 a.m. The homeowners reported a male subject breaking into their property. The suspect was captured on the home’s security cameras.
Chester was charged with Loitering and Prowling, Burglary, Aggravated Stalking and Criminal Trespass.
Gill receives Ga. Forestry Teacher of Year
FORSYTH – The Georgia Forestry Foundation, in partnership with Huber Engineered Woods, has recognized 36-year agriculture education veteran Richard Gill of Brantley County High School as the 2025 Georgia Forestry Teacher of the Year.
This prestigious award honors a Georgia classroom educator who has demonstrated exceptional dedication in teaching students about the importance of Georgia’s forests to our environment, economy and our heritage.
“It’s a true honor for me to be recognized with this award,” said Gill. “Forestry is my passion, and I love nothing more than sharing it with others.”
Three arrested on drug charges during traffic stop
NAHUNTA — A Jesup man recently released from prison was captured after fleeing on foot from a traffic stop early Wednesday morning.
Otis Doomes III, 42, of Jesup, was one of three arrested along with Melvin D. Jackson III, 37, of Allenhurst, Ga., and Danaysia Shantese Houston, 32, of Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Doomes was located and apprehended near the stop after fleeing on foot from the backseat of the 2022 GMC Acadia.
The incident occurred August 20 at approximately 1 a.m., when the Nahunta Police Department’s Crime Suppression & Intelligence Unit (CSIU) K-9 team conducted the traffic stop for speeding (62 mph in a 45-mph zone) along U.S. Highway 301.
City of Nahunta granted $950,371 for improvements
ATLANTA – The City of Nahunta was one of 36 Georgia communities awarded more than $36.2 million in federal grants to support their efforts by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.
The DCA’s announcement for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) was made Tuesday, August 19.
The City of Nahunta was awarded $950,731 for water system improvements in the Burton Street/Target area.
Two injured when four-wheeler flips on Hwy. 110
ATINSON — Two people were injured Saturday night when the fourwheeler they were riding flipped onto its side.
Charles Tankersley, 46, and his passenger, Constance Herring, 43, were transported to Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick following the August 23, 9:40 p.m. accident on Hwy. 110 near Atkinson Road.
Tankersley was traveling south on Hwy. 110 driving a 2024 Honda Rubicon, according to the report of Georgia State Patrol Trooper Dallas Harper. He attempted to make a left turn onto Atkinson Road.
Waynesville man arrested on drug, firearm charges
NAHUNTA — A Waynesville man was taken into custody following a traffic stop Monday, August 25.
Dusty James Little, 43, of Waynesville, was stopped by the Georgia State Patrol for a traffic violation at approximately 8 p.m. The GSP trooper requested assistance from the Nahunta Police Department’s Crime Suppression and Intelligence Unit (CSIU) with Detective Larry Champion responded to the scene.
A search of the vehicle was conducted, resulting in the discovery of a small amount of personal-use marijuana, methamphetamine and a firearm.

CANEY BAY — Brantley County High School was named a Friday Night 5G Lights $5,000 sweepstakes winner.
The Friday, August 29 presentation from T-Mobile officials was made during the non-region home game against Class AA second-ranked Pierce County.
September City of Hoboken approves new Blight Ordinance
HOBOKEN — City of Hoboken council members approved a Blight Ordinance City Attorney Adam Ferrell was asked to revise in July.
Mayor Joey Crews told the council during the Tuesday, September 2 meeting the Blight Ordinance had been talked about since with action needed.
During the August 5 council meeting, City Attorney Adam Ferrell said he had “revised the proposed ordinance.”
Two Waynesville men hurt in early morning crash
ATKINSON — Two Waynesville men were hurt early Saturday morning when a vehicle rammed into a trailer hitched to a stalled vehicle.
The accident occurred at 7:23 a.m., September 6 at Georgia 520 and Hwy. 110, according to the accident report of Georgia State Patrol report of Trooper Gentry Maddox.
George Strayer, 41, was traveling east on Georgia 520 into the rising sun when he struck the trailer of Bradley Ammons, 41.
The front of Strayer’s vehicle struck the trailer pushing it into Ammons, who was putting gas into his disabled vehicle.
Hoboken man arrested by Ware County S.O.
WAYCROSS — A Hoboken man was arrested on a variety of charges early Sunday morning after a Ware County Sheriff’s Deputy found a vehicle abandoned on the side of Ga. 520 near Miles Still Road, Major Neil Skerratt said.
Russell Kovach, 58, of a Terry Way address in Hoboken, was charged September 21 with DUI, Possession of Drugs not in Original Container, Possession of Drug not in its Package and three misdemeanor traffic violations.
Citizen’s call leads to three drug arrests
NAHUNTA — Three people were arrested Sunday after the Nahunta Police Department received a call from a concerned citizen reporting a reckless driver within the city limits.
CSIU Detective Travis Smith located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop September 21 following the approximately 12:44 (p.m.) call.
Crystal Elaine Niece, 38, of Patterson, was charged with Driving with Suspended Tag, No Insurance, Driving while License Suspended, Possession of Fentanyl and Possession of Drug-Related Objects.
Jacoby Antwon Thomas, 40, of Brunswick, was charged with Possession of Fentanyl and Possession of Drug-Related Objects.
Jerry Ritch Raulerson, 46, of Nahunta, was also charged with Possession of Fentanyl and Possession of Drug-Related Objects.
NPD answers call leading to arrest ofNahuntawoman
NAHUNTA — A Nahunta woman was arrested Friday morning, September 26 by the Nahunta Police Department and faces four drug charges.
The NPD Crime Suppression and K-9 Unit responded September 26 to a call from a concerned citizen regarding suspicious activity near a local business.
Captain Brandon Todd and K-9 Quick located the vehicle at approximately 9:30 a.m., being operated by Kandi Diane Mancil, 36, of Nahunta.

Cavagnaro is ’25 Homecoming queen at BCHS
CANEY BAY — Miss Gina Cavagnaro was crowned BCHS’s 2025 Homecoming Queen Friday, September 26 during halftime festivities.
Cavagnaro receives her tiara from 2024 queen Kelsi Bishop. Senior Drake Stalvey was named King by the student body.
Brantley County’s homecoming came against Class A DI topranked and unbeaten Region 1 foe Worth County.
Williams to play with Sacramento’s Stockton squad
SACRAMENTO, Cal. — Brantley County native son Jaylin Williams signed an Exhibit 10 contract Friday with the NBA’s Sacramento Kings.
The franchise waived the 25-year-old, 6-foot-8 wing player Sunday afternoon.
Williams, though, is still part of the franchise. He will go to the Stockton Kings for now, a G League affiliate.
October Crews chosen to GaDOE student advisory council
CANEY BAY — Brantley County High School’s Avery Crews has been selected to serve on the Georgia Department of Education’s student advisory council for 2025-26 State School Superintendent Richard Woods announced his selection of students at the end of last week.
This is the second time in five years a Brantley County student has been chosen to serve on this distinguished committee and represent our state interests.
Waynesville family suffers tragic loss of child
MILLWOOD — A Waynesville family was involved in a tragic one-vehicle accident Sunday morning traveling west on Ga. 520 in Millwood.
Nicholas Dewayne Huggins, Jr., 28, and his wife, Lauren Huggins, 24, were injured in the 10:17 a.m., August 5 crash. Their oneyear-old son, Westly Huggins, was pronounced dead at the scene by Ware County Coroner David Jordan.
The father and mother were transported to Memorial Satilla Health by Ware County EMS and later transferred to JMS Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta for treatment, authorities said.
GBI called in to investigate case in school system
NAHUNTA — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Brantley County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a case involving professional boundaries in employee– student communication.
According to a release by Brantley County Schools Superintendent Dr. Kim Morgan, concerns were brought to the attention of the administration concerning the matter.
“The school system immediately began an internal review, and upon evaluating the evidence, the matter was referred to law enforcement,” she said in a Board of Education press release.
BCHS Class of ’25 SAT scores beat state and nation
NAHUNTA — Class of 2025 SAT scores are in and Brantley County High School students outperformed the state and national average in overall score and in reading and writing.
BCHS students also performed well in math, scoring above the national average. BCHS tied for highest score in the RESA area on Evidence-Based Reading and Writing with a mean score of 557, surpassing the state average of 526 and national average of 508.
The high school also ranked in the top third of the state for total SAT and top 13 percent for mean scores in Reading and Writing.
BOE recognized by GSBA as an Exemplary Board
NAHUNTA — The Brantley County Board of Education was recently recognized by the Georgia School Board Association as an Exemplary Board.
This recognition highlights the board’s commitment to continuous improvement, transparency, and collaboration, all of which play a key role in enhancing educational opportunities for every student in the district The Brantley County BOE met and/or exceeded the criteria to earn the honor.
HES named Distinguished School by GaDOE
HOBOKEN — Hoboken Elementary School was recently named a Title I Distinguished School by the Georgia Department of Eduction.
The GaDOE recognizes the highest-performing five percent of Title I schools in Georgia.
Brantley Show team shows out at NE Florida Fair
CALLAHAN — Brantley County’s Show team finished off a special week here at the Northeast Florida Fair.
The Show team captured nine buckles and numerous banners at the event.
Prior to the Florida event, Brantley County’s 4-H Livestock team captured a couple of firstplace ribbons and a lot of Top 10 performances at the Georgia National Fair in Perry.
Heron Pride Band is Grand Champ at WCHS event
WAYCROSS — Brantley County High School’s Heron Pride Marching Band was named Grand Champion following Saturday’s 23rd annual Sound of Gold Marching Championship competition hosted by Ware County inside Memorial Stadium.
The Heron Pride Marching Band, under the leadership of Band Director Noah Jackson, collected 16 trophies during the October 25 event which included the over six-foot tall Grand Champion trophy.
Receiving Grand Champion was the first for the band and the first for a Class A program in the event.
City of Nahunta council approves 1 mill increase
NAHUNTA — The Nahunta City Council approved the tentative 2025 Millage Rate during Monday night’s meeting.
The council voted to tentatively increase the rate one mill from 11.494 to 12.494 at the November 3, 2025 meeting.
Council members were presented the five-year tax digest history. The rollback was 10.109 and if they go with the rollback, they will only increase their property taxes by $36,000 which is not enough to cover the FY26 budget.
Dr. Morgan one of four finalist for Supt. of the Year
ATHENS — Brantley County Board of Education Superintendent Dr. Kim Morgan has been named one of four finalists for the Georgia Superintendent of the Year for the second year in a row.
The Georgia School Superintendents Association (GSSA) made the announcement during its Fall Bootstrap Conference held at the Classic Center in Athens October 22-23, 2025.
Brantley man dies after GBI interview
HORTENSE – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a shooting involving two GBI Special Agents following an interview on Drury Court in Hortense.
Edmond Leaon West, age 49, of Hortense shot at the two agents. West later died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound Neither agent was injured in the Friday, October 31, 2025 incident.
November Commissioners adopt $18,775,798 FY26 budget
NAHUNTA — Brantley County Commissioners adopted the 2026 budget during its regular monthly meeting Thursday.
Commissioners made a motion to adopt a resolution approving the General Fund revenue budget for FY2026 at $18,775,798.42. The same amount was also approved to adopt a resolution for the General Fund expenditure budget.
BC commission inks agreement with Enterprise
NAHUNTA — Enterprise , best known for its Rent-A-Car business, and the Brantley County Commission agree to a business venture with the national company’s Fleet Management division.
Jean Bordes presented the board options of replacing the County fleet with the Sheriff’s Office, EMS and other county offices during the Tuesday, November 4 county work session.
“Our goal is to help you have more predictable budget year,” said Bordes.
City of Hoboken council approves roll back of mill
HOBOKEN — Hoboken’s City Council unanimously approved to roll back the millage rate for 2026 at 5.060 mills during the November 4 monthly meeting.
The council, on a motion by James Ray and second by Robin Helmuth, voted 5-0 after Mayor Joey Crews presented the rollback figure during the November 4 meeting. Council member Amy Lee was not present.
The new millage rate is .023 lower than 2025’s rate of 5.083.
Four Waycross teens charged in armed robbery
NAHUNTA — Four Waycross teens were arrested Wednesday, November 12 and charged in connection to an armed robbery in Nahunta.
Davin Isiah Miller (19 years old), Ayanda Peterson Nkese (18), Eli Eugene Walker (17) and Keitron Jamar Byrd (17), all of Waycross, were taken into custody November 12 after an unrelated traffic stop.
At approximately 9:51 p.m., officers with the Nahunta Police Department were dispatched to Florida Avenue in reference to an armed robbery. Upon arrival, Detective Travis Smith met with the complainant, who reported he had been robbed at gunpoint during a planned firearm transaction.
Wanted Hortense man captured during traffic stop
NAHUNTA — A Hortense man wanted for a parole violation was arrested Thursday, November 13 by the Nahunta Police Department during a routine traffic stop.
Ricky Christopher Walker, 39 years old, was wanted for a parole violation stemming from prior convictions for Burglary and Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute. He had been paroled in August.
During the stop, Walker fought with officers forcing them to deploy a Taser to get him into custody. Officers also recovered a Ruger pistol in his possession.
Conference call leads to passage of Nahunta budget
NAHUNTA — City of Nahunta officials approved raising its millage rate during a called meeting Friday.
During the course of three Public Hearings, the first held Monday, November 17 (10 a.m.) and two held Tuesday, November 18 (10 a.m., 6 p.m.), a total of nine residents were present.
A conference call was held Friday morning, November 21 with the council voting for the 12.494 millage rate. It passed unanimously.
The increase will generate $124,148 — a 39 percent increase over last year.
December Davison says he is ‘against’ by-pass inwesternBrantley
WAYCROSS — “I’m more against it than anything. I’ve yet to hear anyone say they are for it.”
Brantley County Commissioner Rand Davison said he had already been against the idea of a bypass from Hwy. 84 to Hwy. 82 running through Brantley County, Ware County and Pierce County.
The commissioner added, during the third tri-county meeting held Monday, December 1, he had heard nothing to change his mind, which was met with applause from residents gathered in the standing room only Ware County Commission meeting room.
BCHS Forestry team is tops at nine-team event
COMMERCE — Brantley County High School’s four-man Forestry team grabbed top honors here Wednesday, December 3 at Jackson Trail Christian School’s nine-team invitational event.
Joining FFA advisor Chad Crews were Camille Anderson, Jonathan Crews, Sierra Edwards and J.T. Johns.
Anderson was tops in Tree ID, Sawtimber and captured High Individual honors.
“We have a lot of work to do, but a first-place team honor made the ride worth it,” said Crews.
The next event for the Forestry team is the area meet in January in Nashville hosted by Berrien High School.
Vehicle slams into semi trailer injuring driver
WAYNESVILLE — A Hortense man escaped serious injury when his car hit a semi-trailer stretched across two lanes of eastbound traffic early Tuesday morning.
Scott Duckworth, 61, was eastbound in the right lane of Hwy. 82 in a 1996 Camry when he hit the back tires of a trailer being pulled by a 2007 Kenworth driven by Cruz Saenz, 50, of Locust Grove, Ga., at 7:06 a.m., December 2.
According to the report of Georgia State Patrol Trooper Chase Middleton, Saenz was attempting to back the trailer across both eastbound lanes of Hwy. 82 in inclement weather (heavy fog).
The trailer entered the path of the Duckworth vehicle, which struck the left rear trailer tires.
Waynesville man found hiding under vehicle
WAYNESVILLE — A Waynesville man was arrested after Brantley County deputies responded to a home security alarm here Wednesday.
The alarm was reportedly set off when Nathaniel Lashawn Mc-Cray (5-foot-5, 155 lbs.), a 44-year-old black male, of a Waynesville address, entered a Hawks Landing Drive home through a window about 11:30 a.m., December 3.
Brantley County deputies Jason Lee and Vanessa Williams responded to the 911 call referencing a burglary in progress.
Sheriff Len Davis arrived and searched the garage where he found McCray hiding under a vehicle. McCray was taken into custody and charged with Terroristic Threats and Acts, Burglary (2nd degree) and Criminal Trespass.
Nahunta man facing a charge of Aggravated Assault
WAYNESVILLE — A Nahunta man was apprehended by the Brantley County Sheriff’s Office and faces an Aggravated Assault charge.
William Joseph Simpson, 34, of a Burton Street address in Nahunta, was taken into custody Tuesday, December 9 at 5:27 p.m.
According to the report of Deputy Connor Steedley, he was dispatched to a Whisper Ridge Road residence in reference to a physical domestic call. Steedley wrote he heard shouting from inside the residence when he knocked on the door.
Simpson, who escaped on foot, was apprehended inside another residents.
Ware County teen killed in Hwy. 121 two-car accident
HOBOKEN — A Ware County High School senior was killed December 13 and three others injured when the vehicle she was traveling in struck another vehicle just south of here.
Olivia Grace Ray, 17, died in the Saturday night accident which occurred at 9:47 p.m. Ray was riding in a 2016 GMC Acadia driven by Peyton Mackenzie Turner, 18, of Blackshear.
According to the report of Georgia State Patrol Trooper Adam Screws of Post 16 in Hazlehurst, which was officially released Monday, December 22, the Turner vehicle was traveling north on Hwy. 121 when he veered into the southbound lane attempting to overtake multiple vehicles.
Wilbur David Williams, 55, of Folkston, was traveling south in a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado. The Williams’ vehicle maneuvered left to avoid impact.
Herons is unique mascot shared by five U.S. schools
CANEY BAY — How unique is “Herons” as a mascot for an athletic program?
According to the Georgia High School Association, Brantley County is the only school in the state of Georgia with the Heron as a mascot among the 413 athletic playing schools. There are 51 unique nicknames in Georgia.
Brantley County High School was formed by the consolidation of Hoboken High School and Nahunta High School in 1967.
Interestingly, there are four other schools in the United States that use “Herons” as their nickname, including at least one college, one community college and two more high schools.
