Nahunta – Olen Melvin Mock, Jr., 78 of Nahunta, passed away Friday, December 26, 2025 at his residence after an extended illness.
Born in Bainbridge, Ga., Mock’s parents were Olen Melvin Mock, Sr. and Dorothy Juanita Sheffield Mock. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Rory Gill Mock.
Mock was a pipefitter for Local #177 and served in the United States Marine Corp., during the Vietnam War. He served at the Battle of Hue City Tet Offensive and received a Purple Heart for everything he endured in Vietnam.
He played for the Atlanta Falcons in 1966 and then went and played for the Marines before being sent to Vietnam. Mock loved spending time with his grandchildren, riding his Harley Davidson, watching football and watching all of the Brantley County Herons’ sports.
Survivors include his wife, Vernoy Mock of Nahunta; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Mock (Julie) of Hoboken; two grandsons, Jay Mock and Jonathan Mock; and also several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
The family will have a private celebration in Mock’s hometown at a later date.
