PCHS JV Bears fall in three of first four matchups

Pierce County’s junior varsity Bears opened their season winning just one of four games.

The Bears (1-3) dropped their season opener Tuesday, December 9 falling 53-30 to Charlton County. PCHS bounced back to slip past homestanding Montgomery County Thursday, December 11 notching a 31-28 victory.

Pierce County fell 54-34 Saturday, December 13 to visiting Wayne County. Brantley County posted a 66-41 road victory Friday, December 19 over the Bears.

BEARVILLE — Charlton County outscored the Bears 32-12 over the middle two periods overcoming a three-point deficit.

PCHS built an 8-5 first quarter lead with the Indians missing all six free throw attempts (3-of-16 overall). The visitors took control of the game in the second stanza outscoring the Bears 22-3 for a comfortable 26-11 halftime lead.

Charlton County extended the margin by one point by the end of the third period outscoring PCHS 10-9 for a 36-20 advantage. The Indians outpointed Pierce County 1610 in the final period.

Miles Pitts topped the Bears with 11 points. D.J. Moody followed with eight points. Maverick Pitts and Dathan Thornton chipped five points and four points respectively. Jared Watson contributed two points.

Charlton County had 12 players reach the scoring column led by Tre Hamilton’s 13 points — all in the first half.

MT. VERNON — Pierce County outscored the Eagles 8-4 in the fourth period to overcoming a 24-23 deficit for the win.

The two teams battled through a standoff in the opening two quarters. They were tied at 4-all after one period and 10-all at intermission.

Both teams surpassed their first half totals with Montgomery County clipping the Bears 14-13 in the third period to take a one-point lead to the final stanza.

Moody led PCHS with 12 points with Maverick Pitts following with 10 points. Miles Pitts and Will Higginson were next with four points and three points respectively. Watson netted two points.

Torion Smith paced the Eagles with a game-high 14 points.

Wayne County....................54 Bears..................................34 

BEARVILLE — Wayne County built a 24-point lead through three quarters en route to the victory over the Bears.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out a 12-4 first quarter lead. They outpointed PCHS 17-13 in the second period to open up a 29-17 lead at the break.

Wayne County put the game away in the third quarter outscoring the Bears 16-4 for a commanding 45-21 advantage. The Bears outpointed the visitors 13-9 in the final stanza.

Maverick Pitts scored 13 of his game-high 15 points in the second period to lead the Bears. Miles Pitts was next with 10 points with eight coming in the final quarter. Moody contributed seven points with Watson adding two points.

Brantley County .................66 Bears ..................................41 

BEARVILLE — Brantley County outscored the Bears 46-14 over the middle two periods to pull away from a first quarter tie for the win.

Tied at 13-apiece at the end of the first stanza, the Herons used a 24-8 blitz over the second quarter to build a 37-21 lead.

The visitors followed with a second straight 16-point scoring advantage in the third period outscoring the Bears 22-6 for a commanding 59-27 advantage. PCHS doubled up the Herons 14-7 in the “mercy rule” final period.

Moody led the Bears scoring 10 of his 14 points in the last period. Maverick Pitts dropped in 10 points with MeMontre Clark finishing with eight.

Miles Pitts and Higginson followed with four points and three points respectively. JaShun Faison netted two points.

Brantley County had a trio of players combine for 40 points. Nick McKever (trey) and J.B. Johnson led the way with 15 points apiece. Tallon Collins finished with 10 points.

Ellis Westover (two treys) and Dayden Bryon (two treys) followed with seven points and six points respectively.

Alex Keen (trey) added five points with Andrew Stanley (trey) and Travon Baker each bagging three points. Napolean Platt canned a pair of free throws.
