Special to the WJH Greyson Christmas, an 11th grade Ware County 4H participant, was recently selected as a National 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador.
In this role, Christmas represents 4-H at the local, state, and national levels, promoting youth development, strong character, and the highest standards of safety and responsibility within the shooting sports program.
Georgia 4-H Project S.A.F.E. uses shooting sports as a tool to teach valuable life skills. Project S.A.F.E. (Shooting Awareness, Fun and Education) provides youth with opportunities to build a sense of belonging, practice teamwork in a safe environment, and strengthen concentration skills.
Safety and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment remain top priorities. Trained volunteers lead clubs in BB, Air Rifle, Air Pistol, .22 Rifle, Shotgun, and Archery across more than 110 Georgia counties, including Ware County.
“Being an ambassador means more than wearing a title, it means becoming a role model, a mentor, and a trusted representative of what 4-H stands for,” the youth said of the role.
Christmas completed ambassador training in July, where he connected with student leaders from across the United States who share his passion for shooting sports and youth leadership.
He said he hopes his journey encourages other young people to explore the opportunities 4-H offers. Christmas, a homeschooled student and a member of the Ware County High School rifle team, said his “decision to become a National Ambassador grew from my passion for shooting sports and my desire to help others discover the same sense of purpose and belonging that I found in 4-H.”
As a National Ambassador, Christmas takes on several key responsibilities. He works to model strong leadership within 4-H Shooting Sports and assists with public demonstrations, workshops, presentations, and outreach events. In these roles, he shares the mission of 4-H Shooting Sports with participants and the broader community, representing both programs with professionalism and pride.
Christmas said his motivation comes from wanting to support the future of the program that shaped him.
“4-H has played a major role in shaping who I am,” he said. “Serving as an ambassador allows me to help ensure that its traditions, values, and opportunities remain strong for the next generation.”
