Brantley County splits matchup at Wayne County

JESUP — Visiting Brantley County split for a second time Tuesday with host Wayne County.

The Lady Herons (7-1) captured a third consecutive victory to complete the season sweep of the Lady Yellow Jackets (8-5), who entered with three straight wins, rallying for a 43-41 victory. BCHS won the first matchup at home December 4 42-36.

The Herons (3-5) fell short in their upset bid of the Class 4A school in the nightcap falling 54-45. Wayne County (8-3), who won for the fifth consecutive game, rolled to a 63-39 decision in the first meeting in Caney Bay.

Brantley County will next play Tuesday, December 30 against visiting Appling County. The Lady Pirates handed the Lady Herons their lone loss of the season December 2 in Baxley winning 44-39.

Lady Herons .................43 Wayne County...............41 Tamiyah Coley’s late three capped a furious comeback by the Lady Herons to upend homestanding Wayne County.

Coley (four treys) hit three long-range jumpers in the final period scoring nine of her game-high 18 points in the come-form-behind victory. Abbie Lee (trey) added 16 points.

Anniston Bowers and Chloe Johns followed with four points and three points respectively. Julie Carter netted two points.

Down 33-27 entering the final eight minutes, BCHS’s deficit reached double-digits at the six-minute mark. The comeback was keyed by Johns’ oldfashioned three-point play. Coley scored the final nine points.

Wayne County started fast hitting four treys in the first period en route to claiming a 17-12 lead. Two more threes in the second quarter helped the Lady Yellow Jackets to an 11-9 scoring advantage and a 28-21 halftime lead.

The scoring pace slowed in the third stanza with the Lady Herons holding a 6-5 advantage closing the deficit to 33-27. BCHS doubled up the Lady Yellow Jackets over the final eight minutes 16-8.

Wayne County was led by Mimi Everett’s (three treys) 16 points. Alyssa Robinson added 10 points.

Wayne County ..............54 Herons .........................45 The Yellow Jackets outpointed Brantley County 31-20 over the final 16 minutes overcoming a two-point halftime deficit to get the win.

BCHS bolted out to a 16-12 first quarter lead. Wayne County sliced the deficit in half outscoring the Herons 11-9 in the second stanza closing the deficit to 25-23 at intermission.

The Yellow Jackets exploded in the third period to take control outscoring Brantley County 21-9 to open up a 10-point lead at 44-34. BCHS finished the game outpointing Wayne County 11-10.

Jayden Simmons (trey) led the Herons scoring 12 of his 16 points in the first half. Hayze Evans (two treys) followed wiht eight points.

Tristian Dyess and Cole Courson netted six points apiece. Holton DePratter and Nathan Howell (trey) chipped in four and three points respectively. Kent Thomas bagged two points.

The Yellow Jackets got a game-high 21 points from Ralph Doomes with 19 points over the middle two periods. Dwayne Smith (two treys) contributed 15 points.
