State patrol releases report on fatal bus/ car accident

An accident report on the Nov. 10 bus/car wreck that claimed the lives of a Waycross couple has finally been completed by the Georgia State Patrol, Waycross Post.

Lu Ann Jenkins, 70, and her husband, David Richard “DeJay” Jenkins, 68, both of Waycross died of injuries they received in the 3:10 p.m. accident.

Mrs. Jenkins died of injuries she received in the wreck in the emergency room at Memorial Satilla Health in Waycross, the afternoon of the accident.

Mr. Jenkins was flown by AirEvac medical helicopter to UF Health in Jacksonville, FL. He died from his injuries Friday, Nov. 21.

According to the report, Mr. Jenkins was driving a 2020 Buick Encore traveling north on Meadow Wood Road. He was attempting to cross Ware Street Extension when he pulled into the path of a 2017 Freightliner B2B chassis school bus owned by Pierce County Schools. The bus was driven by Amber Nicole Steedley, 28, of Waycross.

Two 10 year-old-students were on board the bus. No one on the bus was injured in the accident.

The state’s specialized collision reconstruction team (SCRT) was called in to conduct the investigation.

Trooper Chase Middleton investigated the accident.

The Jenkins’ had lived in Waycross since 2006, coming from Plant City FL. They helped their family with Affordable Monuments of Waycross and also owned DeJay Memorials when they lived in Florida. Mr. Jenkins managed five mortuaries in Florida and was a Mason and former Shriner. Mrs. Jenkins was a medical secretary for many years.

The couple enjoyed rescuing cats, visiting casinos while on vacations, but most importantly, spending time with and working with their family.
