Pierce County Recreation Board Highlights

(The Pierce County Recreation Board discussed and/or voted on the following during their monthly meeting December 2.)

Planning workshop: Steve Card, Executive Director of the Georgia Parks and Recreation Association (GRPA), conducted a workshop on visions and goals for the department after the meeting. (See related story.)

New recreation complex: Recreation board chairman Chris Wright didn’t have anything concrete to report on plans for the new recreation complex. Architect Carter and Sloope have been working on plans for the proposed new recreation complex and the renovations to the Ware Street Park for several months. The complex is slated to be put out for bids sometime early next year.

Update on Tiger Field project: County Chairman Neal Bennett said progress continues on improvements to Tiger Field. He reported additional phases to include paving the track and improving parking will be done in the future, though some parts will be delayed until after the SE Cancer Walk in the spring. The walk will be held at the track. The county received a $343,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) Matching Grant for the work. The said additional improvements will put the final price tag at just over $1 million.

Director’s report: Director Maureen Brown gave a report on the upcoming basketball season. A total of 192 kids have signed up so far including 123 boys, 33 girls and 36 on the co-ed cubs team The 12U and 14U girls teams may have to be combined due to small numbers. Brown said teams are currently being formed and plans call for games to begin January 3, 2026. Brown reported the 8u football team was to compete at state Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) playoffs in Tifton last weekend. She also announced the 8u volleyball team was recognized as GRPA district champions at last week’s county commission meeting. (See related item.)

Brown also announced the seniors group recently had a fishing trip outing and she said she plans to hold more senior oriented events in the future.

By-laws update: Chairman Wright announced the board would review updates and revisions to its by-laws at its next meeting.

Next meeting: The next monthly meeting will be held at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the Southeast Georgia Regional Agriculture Center (SEGARAC) on College Avenue.
