Lady Bears split pair of road tilts

Pierce County’s Lady Bears split a pair of road tilts with the victory coming Thursday in Hazlehurst.

The Lady Bears (1-3) notched their first win of the young season Thursday, December 4 recording a 35-30 victory over winless Jeff Davis (0-5).

Bacon County (7-0) followed Saturday, December 6 with a 59-24 home victory to complete the season sweep. The Lady Red Raiders posted a 50-44 victory November 18 in Bearville.

BCHS is off to one of its best starts this century and less than a decade removed from a five-year stretch (2012-13 through 2016-17) in which the Lady Red Raiders went 5-100 and lost 69 straight games.

PCHS hosted Charlton County Tuesday, December 9 in the first of three games on this week’s slate. The Lady Bears travel Thursday, December 11 to Mt. Vernon to face Montgomery County and return home for a Saturday, December 13 matchup with Wayne County.

Lady Bears.............35 Jeff Davis ..............30 HAZLEHURST — Isabella Marx scored a team-high 13 points leading the Lady Bears to their first win against Jeff Davis.

Marx was one of five PCHS players to reach the scoring. Madi Mc-Gatha and Claire Murray followed with seven points apiece. Caren Drew (off the bench) and Ansley Hutcheson each netted four points.

Pierce County jumped out to a 12-3 lead by the end of the first period. The Lady Yellow Jackets sliced one point off the deficit by intermission outscoring the visitors 87 to trail 19-11 at the half.

Jeff Davis cut two more points off the margin during the third quarter outpointing the Lady Bears 8-6 to climb to within 2519. The home team continued to chip away over the final eight minutes using an 11-10 scoring advantage before running out of time in the fivepoint loss.

The Lady Yellow Jackets’ Bree Coney copped game-high scoring laurels finishing with 14 points.

Bacon County........59 Lady Bears............24 ALMA — Marnay’jah Reynolds scored 20 of her game-high 27 points in the first half leading the Lady Red Raiders past PCHS.

Reynolds, a junior point guard, has scored 20 or more points in six of Bacon County’s seven games.

The Lady Red Raiders took control early racing out to a 20-7 first quarter lead. They outscored Pierce County 14-10 in the second period to open up a 34-17 halftime advantage.

An 18-5 scoring run in the third stanza pushed Bacon County’s margin to 52-22 at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Red Raiders outpointed PCHS 7-2 in the “mercy rule” final period.

Murray led the Lady Bears with 11 points. Marx was next with six points. Hutcheson netted four points. Drew and Layla Chandel chipped in two points and one point respectively.

Bacon County received nine points from Macie Holton and six points apiece from Maysn Hutto, Nate’vya Chancy and Makayla Thomas. Aallyah Starling added four points with Jateria Smith making a free throw.
