WAYNESVILLE — A Hortense man escaped serious injury when his car hit a semi-trailer stretched across two lanes of eastbound traffic early Tuesday morning.
Scott Duckworth, 61, was eastbound in the right lane of Hwy. 82 in a 1996 Camry when he hit the back tires of a trailer being pulled by a 2007 Kenworth driven by Cruz Asaenz, 50, of Locust Grove, Ga., at 7:06 a.m., December 2.
According to the report of Georgia State Patrol Trooper Chase Middleton, Asaenz was attempting to back the trailer across both eastbound lanes of Hwy. 82 in inclement weather (heavy fog).
The trailer entered the path of the Duckworth vehicle, which struck the left rear trailer tires. The 2007 Kenworth came to a controlled rest facing north across both eastbound lanes.
The 1996 Camry came to a came to a controlled rest facing east in the right lane.
Duckworth told Trooper Middleton he did not see the semi-trailer backing across the lanes of travel until it was too late due to the inclement weather.
Duckworth said he applied the brakes, but could not stop in time to avoid impact.
Asaenz was charged with two violations for causing the accident, according to the report of Trooper Middleton.
Neither driver was transported to a hospital.
