County Commission highlights

The Brantley County Board of Commissioners discussed/voted on the following agenda items during the Tuesday, December 2 work session and the Thursday, December 4 regular monthly meeting.

• Division of Family & Children Services (DFCS) Board appointment: The county commission unanimously approved Jan Prescott to the DFCS board for another term.

• Christmas bonuses: Commissioners approved a $100 net Christmas bonus for full-time employees.

• 2026 Employee holiday list: County Manager Joey Cason reported the county holiday list for 2026, which was approved by the board. This year’s holiday list is identical to the one proposed for 2025.

• Purchase of cardiac monitor: The purchase of a $18,610.34 used Stryker Cardiac Monitor was approved by the county commission. This decision follows the approval of three new monitors last year. This cardiac monitor will replace a 12-year-old unit which was not working efficiently, according to the county manager. The new monitor will be paid for by Opioid funds.

• Traylor Business Services LLC. — Tax Assessors contract renewal: Commissioners renewed the contract for Traylor Business Services LLC.’s annual verification program.

• PrimeSouth Bank as Depository for County funds:

PrimeSouth Bank was approved as a depository for county funds.

• Establishment of Depository Accounts for county constitutional officers: Brantley County elected officials and constitutional officers were approved to establish depository accounts.

• Authorization for constitutional officers and elected officials to use county federal ID number: Constitutional elected officials were approved to use their county federal ID to accept checks, money orders, cash, cashier’s checks, electronic transactions, and credit/debit card payments while acting in their official duties.

• Medical Claims Account with PrimeSouth Bank: Commissioners approved the resolution to open a new Medical Claims bank account at PrimeSouth Bank.

In the past, a third-party administrator was responsible for sending a projected medical claims amount for the year to the county commission. That amount was paid by county commissioners with any excess being refunded by the end of the year.

The new system eradicates the need for a third-party administrator, putting Brantley County commissioners in charge of the projected medical claims account.

• Appointment of vice chairman for 2026: Commissioner Hal Herndon was approved vice chairman for the 2026 Brantley County Board of Commissioners.

• Bids for exterminating services: SSI Pest Arrest and Sloan Pest Control each submitted bids of $650 for monthly rates.

The board elected to remain partnered with SSI Pest Arrest.

• Bid for fire extinguisher services: Commissioners approved a bid of $1,699.35 from A1A Fire Protection in Brunswick for fire extinguisher services. They were the sole bidder.

• Bids for new Annex building furniture: The county manager reported he had received two bids to supply the new annex building with office furniture.

National Business Furniture, an on-line business, submitted a bid of $24,606, while Smith & Associates in Brunswick bid $28,170.75.

The board accepted the bid by Smith & Associates on Cason’s recommendation due to their accessibility in case problems arise in the future.

• Bids for Road Restriping – GDOT Safety Action Grant: Commissioners approved Peek Pavement Marking LLC of Remerton, Ga., for 48.7 miles of new road markings and striping, along with signs for a cost of $458,175.

The list of roads includes Rabon Road East, Rabon Road West, Baker Creek Road, Browntown Road and Knox Road.

This will be paid (90 percent) for by additional state SAP (Safety Action Program) funding that the board received from GDOT. The county has a 10% match.

• Brantley County Library land acceptance: The acceptance of one acre of land beside Brantley County Library, which was a Quit see COUNTY, Page 5 Claim deed by the Brantley County Library board, was approved by the commission.

This decision ensures that the land cannot be used for purposes outside of the library.

• 2026 Worker Compensation Contribution payment: Commissioners approved the 2026 worker compensation contribution payment of $239,129 to ACCG (Association County Commissioners of Georgia).

The payment total dropped $44,703.

• County Manager report: Cason reported the new annex building is nearing completion, with final touches being installed now.

He said the project is waiting on flag poles, business lettering and a fresh air handler which should arrive by the end of December.

Cason informed commissioners they could tour the facility before an undetermined grand opening date.

The county manager told commissioners there will be budget amendments needed to close out 2025, which will be discussed during the January 4 work session for approval in the January 6 regular meeting.

Cason said the County is switching to Mark III Employee Benefits Insurance.

“By mid-2026, the board will go from being independently insured to being part of a pool created by Mark III,” said Cason.
