BCHS swept at Appling County, splits with Wayne County

Brantley County’s basketball teams suffered a sweep at Appling County and split with visiting Wayne County after returning from the Thanksgiving break.

The Lady Herons (4-1) lost their first game of the season Tuesday, December 2 in Baxley to the Lady Pirates (2-0) falling 44-39.

The Herons (1-4) lost a heartbreaker dropping a 57-56 decision in the nightcap to the Pirates (1-1). No information was reported on the matchup.

The Lady Herons held on for a 42-36 victory Thursday, December 4 over the visiting Lady Yellow Jackets (3-4), who entered having won three of their last four games.

Wayne County (4-1) handed the Herons a third consecutive loss in the finale posting a 63-39 victory. No information was reported by BCHS.

Clinch County visited Caney Bay Tuesday, December 9. Brantley County travels Friday, December 12 to Folkston to face Charlton County.

BCHS visits Wayne County Tuesday, December 16 to wrap up the season series. Brantley County closes out its pre-Christmas schedule Friday, December 19 traveling to Pierce County.

Appling County...............44 Lady Herons...................39 BAXLEY — The Lady Pirates grabbed a first quarter lead it would not relinquish in their season- opening victory over Brantley County.

Appling County opened up a six-point advantage at 8-2 through the first eight minutes. The defensive struggle continued in the second quarter with the Lady Pirates holding a 7-6 scoring advantage in building a 15-8 halftime lead.

The pace quickened over the third period with Appling County using a 14-11 scoring advantage to take a double-digit lead at 2919. The Lady Herons surpassed their production through three quarters outscoring the host 2015 in the final period.

Abbie Lee posted her fifth consecutive double-double with a 13-point, 11-rebound performance. She also had four steals and an assist.

Tamiyah Coley (four rebounds, two assists, steal) netted eight points. Chloe Johns (three rebounds, three steals) and Edie Lowther (three rebounds) each scored five points.

Brodie Allen (two steals) bagged four points. Anniston Bowers (three rebounds, three steals, two assists) and Julia Miller (rebound) chipped in two points apiece.

Appling County’s Madison Jones claimed game-high scoring honors finishing with 18 points.

Lady Herons...................42 Wayne County ................36 CANEY BAY — Ella Highsmith recorded her first doubledouble of the season helping the Lady Herons turn back visiting Wayne County.

Highsmith scored a seasonbest 18 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Lee’s streak of double-doubles ended. She scored 13 points, pulled down five rebounds, had three steals and an assist.

BCHS held a slim 12-11 lead at the end of the first period. The Lady Herons outscored Wayne County 10-9 in the second stanza to take a 22-20 lead to the locker room.

Brantley County used a 14-9 scoring advantage in the third quarter to take a 36-29 lead in the final eight minutes. The Yellow Jackets outpointed BCHS 76 in the fourth period.

Coley was (team-high six steals, rebound, assist) was next in the scoring column for the Lady Herons finishing with seven points. Carter (three rebounds, two assists, steal) and Bowers (two rebounds, two steals) contributed two points each.

Wayne County ................63 Herons ...........................39 CANEY BAY — Wayne County had four players reach double figures combining for 52 points in the win over the Herons.

Dwayne Smith led the way with 15 points, five steals and four assists. Gavin Hilton netted 14 points to go along with four assists and four steals. Ralph Doomes and Gha’Gaiedn Frazier contributed 12 points and 11 points respectively.

The Yellow Jackets took control early racing out to a 20-6 first quarter lead. They outpointed Brantley County 19-9 in the second period to open up a 39-15 halftime advantage.

Wayne County continued to widen its advantage over the third stanza outscoring the Herons 15-9 for a 54-24 margin. BCHS outpointed the Yellow Jackets 15-9 during the “mercy rule” final period.
