Convenience store to replace 1930s station

Waycrossans and many more throughout Ware County are sharing memories of a former full-service gas station that has been torn down at the corner of State Street and Plant Avenue.

Built in the 1930s, the former Hardy’s Super Service station site served locals for approximately 90 years.

In the early years, an arch spread from one side of State State to the other and was labeled part of the Wilson Highway to Washington D.C.

Over the later years the name was changed. It was last known as Carl’s BP with Benjie Thrift taking the reigns just a couple of years ago.

Many residents have shared “this is a sad moment”, “lots of memories growing up there” to “a petition should have been started to save it as a historical landmark.”

The demolition of the building started Friday, November 21 with a company from Adel, Ga.

According to Thrift, the property was sold and will be home to a convenience store.

Thrift is relocating to Memorial Drive diagonally across from Wendy’s.
