Voters decide Tuesday during runoff elections who will occupy the seats from Districts 3 and 4 on the Waycross City Commission.
Voting will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., December 2 at C.C. McCray City Auditorium for District 3 and at Memorial Stadium for District 4.
Shawn Sanders and incumbent Katrena Felder are vying for the District 3 seat while William Tompkins and Tim Peacock face off for the District 4 post.
The District 3 spot is for a full, fouryear term on the five-person commission. The other race is a special election to fill the seat that’s been vacant since the January 29 death of Diane Hopkins early in the second year of her sixth term.
The District 4 winner will immediately be added to the panel, and not have to face the voters again until 2027 along with candidates for the District 5 seat as well as Waycross Mayor.
Early voting for the runoffs began Monday, November 24 and concluded today (Wednesday, November 26) at the Ware County Board of Elections and Registration office, 408 Tebeau Street.
Voters did not have to cast a ballot in the General Election to vote in the runoffs.
A non-partisan forum for voters to become more familiar with the candidates and their positions on city issues was held Saturday, November 22 at the Waycross- Ware County Public Library.
The runoff candidates emerged from a three-person race in each district after the November 4 voting left none with more than 50 percent of the vote.
Sanders totaled 123 votes (46.42 percent) to 85 for Felder and 54 for King Goree. Tompkins led in the race for the other district post with 155 votes (45.06 percent) to 132 for Peacock. Linda Slaughter-Titus was third with 55.
Incumbent Shawn Roberts defeated challenger Willie Oliver for the District 1 post while former commissioner William Simmons returns to the panel from District 2 after topping Ayana Moore and Barry Worley.
