The Waycross City Commission has a called meeting at 5 p.m., today (Wednesday, November 26) in City Hall after its previous business meetings this month were cancelled for lack of a quorum.

No business was held during the Tuesday, November 18 session with the absences of Commissioners Katrena Felder and Alvin Nelson, who were out of town for training. The same was the case on November 4 when Sheinita Bennett and Felder were gone.

Neither of the agendas for those meetings contained time-sensitive items and were easily carried over to a successive session. A handful of bids and resolutions, and two dozen or so privilege license renewals will be considered today along with anything else which has arisen since the last meeting.

The commission did handle administrative duties at both earlier meetings. Last week, Mayor Michael-Angelo James presented a certificate and Waycross Golden Spike No. 38 of 100 to Emmelee Haddock as a winner of the Sgt. Kennedy L. Sanders Outstanding Citizens Achievement Award.

Haddock, a junior at Ware County Highl, rallied students to action in helping alleviate food shortages for community families with the suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits earlier this month in the wake of the government shutdown.

For the last five years, Haddock has volunteered with the county’s summer lunch program and school backpack food programs. The daughter of Susan and Thomas Haddock put that knowledge to work during the SNAP suspension to help secure food for families and their children until benefits were restored.

The award, named for the late Waycross resident who died last year while serving with her U.S. Army reserve unit in Jordan, recognizes citizens for their leadership, service, and dedication to the community.

There was a quorum for the commission’s planning and information session Monday, November 17 with the Mayor, Roberts, Bennett and Nelson present.

City Manager Ulysses “Duke” Rayford said Ryland Environmental, the city’s refuse contractor, will not pick up trash Thursday, November 27 because of Thanksgiving. The company will run its Thursday route a day later along with its Friday route.

Customers should put their cans out Thursday night with Friday’s early start.
