ST. SIMONS ISLAND — Mrs. Ernestine Dixon Langford, a woman whose zest for life, gracious southern hospitality, and generous spirit of volunteerism defined her, passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at Heritage Oaks on St. Simons

Island.

Born in Blackshear to James “Jim” Strickland and Sarah Jane Proctor Dixon, she was one of 13 children and a graduate of Blackshear High School. Mrs. Langford, the wife of Hugh Langford, was a resident of Glynn County since 1960 and worked for Southern Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator for 19 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church for more than 65 years.

A gifted seamstress, she made many of her daughters’ clothes and also was a wonderful cook and baker. She was active in the Parent-Teacher Association all the years her four children attended school.

Mrs. Langford was also very active in her community. She served the Exchangette Club of Brunswick for 43 years, the Woman’s Club of Brunswick for 30 years, Pink Ladies Hospital Auxiliary Volunteer for 12 years, and worked in the Dogwood Garden Club until it disbanded. She was recognized with a state award for her service on the Easter Seal Board and her work with the Stroke Club for 10 years. She also served as Georgia Federation Eighth District president for two years, two terms as president of Woman’s Club of Brunswick, and two years on state committee.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Hugh Langford, her parents, 11 siblings, and a son-in-law, Ronnie Sims.

She is survived by her daughters, Judith Spaulding (Mike) of Fernandina Beach, Fla., Joanne Sims and Jeannie Bradford (Johnny) of Brunswick, and Jayne Smith (Kirk) of Athens, Ga.; sister, Elinor Carter of Waycross; grandchildren, April Kelly (Ben), Marcus Edgy (Kelly), Jerry Bradford (Sara), Magen Norboge (Tyler), and Katie Sims; great-grandchildren, Paxton Edgy (Britney), Hugh Edgy, Ella-Kate Edgy, Mary-Beth Kelly, Llywen Bradford, Jensen Norboge, and Edwin Norboge; one great-great grandchild, Emerie Edgy; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held November 12 at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial followed in Brunswick Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were Carroll Carter, David Riggins, Wendell Hires, Jerry Bradford, Paxton Edgy, Hugh Edgy, Ben Kelly, Marcus Edgy, and Tyler Norboge. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Woman’s Club of Brunswick, Exchangette Club of Brunswick, and Southeast Georgia Health System Auxiliary members.
