The Georgia Water Coalition’s 2025 report includes area individuals, governmental leaders and civic organizations among its list of honorees who worked to protect the state’s waterways and impoundments.
The organization released its annual “Clean 13 Report” Tuesday afternoon in a video press conference originating in Atlanta.
The report highlights the extraordinary work accomplished by individuals, businesses, non-profit organizations and state and local governments to protect water.
Individuals and entities from Charlton, Clinch and Ware counties, dubbed “Okefenokee Protectors,” were cited for their efforts in protecting the Okefenokee Swamp. Each of the counties borders the swamp.
The collective efforts of philanthropists, dozens of advocacy groups, key legislators and thousands of citizens led to the purchase of land by the Conservation Fund to stop an Alabama company’s proposed heavy mineral sands mine on land in Charlton County near the swamp.
