The Waycross Fire Department has visited elementary schools the last few weeks to speak to first-graders about fire safety. Personnel spoke with students on the importance of smoke detectors in their homes, and if it goes off to “get out and stay out.” They were encouraged to ask their parents if smoke detectors were in their homes and if not, WFD will install one for free. Another key topic was never to play with matches or lighters. Firefighters also discussed the “stop, drop and roll’ procedure should their clothes catch fire. Students learned about 911 calls, what makes an emergency, and the importance of knowing their home address. They learned about the gear firefighters wear to protect themselves in a burning structure. They saw all the tools and equipment on the fire truck and learned their purpose. Each of the participants received a Junior Firefighter badge sticker. WFD has two Fire Life and Safety Educators ready to educate all school grade levels and other organizations in the community. To set up a class, call (912) 287-2937.
