Hoopsters split scrimmage and opener

Brantley County High School’s 2025-26 basketball season tipped off with a pair of splits.

The Lady Herons (1-0) knocked Class AA pre-season 10th-ranked Tattnall County 53-51 in overtime Tuesday, November 11 outside of Reidsville in a scrimmage. The Herons (0-1) fell in the final seconds 54-52 to the Warriors.

The season tipped for keeps Friday night in Pearson at Atkinson County. The Lady Herons rolled to an easy 61-27 victory in the opener. The Rebels would do likewise in the nightcap posting a 67-47 victory.

No information was provided for the Herons’ matchups.

Brantley County played its home opener Tuesday, October 18 hosting neighboring Charlton County. Atkinson County visits Tuesday, October 25.

Lady Herons ..........53 Tattnall Co. ......51, OT REIDSVILLE — Brantley County outscored the homestanding Lady Warriors 9-7 in the overtime period to get the victory.

The Lady Herons jumped out to a 10-8 first quarter advantage. They stretched the margin to seven points by intermission outscoring the home team 13-8 for a 23-16 lead.

Tattnall County battled back slicing the deficit to two points by the end of third period outscoring the visitors 13-8 to trail 31-29. The Lady Warriors outpointed BCHS 15-13 in the final period tying the score at 44-apiece.

Abbie Lee was the lone Lady Heron in double figures finishing with a double- double. Lee scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to go along with four steals.

Julie Carter (two steals, two rebounds) finished with eight points. Mia Kate Bates (rebound, steal) and Chloe Johns (two steals, rebound, assist) followed with seven points each.

Ella Highsmith (eight rebounds, steal, assist) netted five points. Tamiyah Coley (five rebounds, three assists, two steals) netted four points.

Tattnall Co. ............54 Herons...................52 REIDSVILLE — Tattnall County battled back from a 14-point third quarter deficit hitting a game-winning three-point shot with eight seconds remaining to pick up the win over the Herons.

The Warriors grabbed a 14-11 advantage by the end of the first period. Brantley County battled back in the second stanza using a 12-9 scoring advantage to tie the game at 23-all at intermission.

BCHS found a scoring rhythm in the third period in bolting out to a 43-29 lead with just over a minute to play. Tattnall County scored the final five points to trail 43-34 entering the final period.

The Warriors outscored Brantley County 20-9 in the final eight minutes for the win.

Lady Herons .........61 Atkinson Co. .........27 PEARSON — The Lady Herons built a 20-point halftime lead en route to knocking off Atkinson County in the season opener for both teams.

Lee, Highsmith and Carter reached double figures combining for 38 points in outscoring the Lady Rebels.

BCHS raced out to a 17-7 lead by the end of the first eight minutes. Both teams matched their first quarter outputs with the Lady Herons taking a 34-14 lead at the break.

Brantley County burst out the lockerroom outscoring the Lady Rebels 22-6 in the third stanza to open up a 56-20 lead. Atco outpointed the Lady Herons 7-5 during the “mercy rule” final quarter.

Lee posted her second double-double in as many games scoring 14 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, recording eight steals and dishing out three assists. Highsmith tied Lee for scoring honors netting 14 points. She grabbed eight rebounds, had four steals and an assist.

Carter contributed 10 points to go along with five rebounds, two steals and an assist. Bates scored eight points and handed out an assist. Johns scored five points, recorded three steals and grabbed a rebound.

Edi Lowther netted four points and pulled down three rebounds. Brodie Allen bagged three points and had a rebound and assist. Grace Carver finished with two points and three rebounds. Coley canned a free throw, handed out three assists, added two steals and a rebound.

Atkinson Co. .........67 Herons .................47 PEARSON — Atkinson County used a big second period to distance itself from the Herons en route to the 20-point win.

The Rebels jumped ahead 18-13 following the opening eight minutes. Atco used a 24-10 scoring blitz in the second stanza to stretch the margin to 42-23 at intermission.

Brantley County claimed the third quarter clipping the Rebels 13-12 to trail 54-36. Atco oupointed the Herons 13-11 over the final eight minutes.
