Brenée Wright, Adjunct Instructor of Adult Education in Patterson, recently visited West Fraser’s sawmill in Blackshear.
“After speaking with a student employed at another mill in Southeast Georgia, who mentioned that his supervisor encouraged him to obtain his GED to qualify for a higher position, I decided to extend this opportunity to the employees at this local mill,” said Wright. “I discussed the available opportunity with the office manager and explained that workers meeting specific qualifications can take the GED test at no cost throughout November.”
Accounting Clerk Brandi White and Angela Strickland in HR saw the idea as a valuable opportunity for employees without a high school diploma and agreed to post informational flyers in the break room. Additionally, White mentioned she would share details of the GED program's general schedule with both employers and employees in Patterson.
Wright says building relationships within the local community like the one with West Fraser is essential for increasing awareness of the ongoing GED program.
“Engaging with the office manager at West Fraser served as a reminder that collaborative relationships are vital to strengthening our community initiatives,” said Wright.
