County highlights

The Brantley County Commission discussed/voted on the following agenda items during the Tuesday, November 4 work session and Thursday, November 6 monthly meeting.

• Recreation Board appointments: County Manager Joey Cason told commissioners the Recreation Advisory Board recommended Michael Anderson and Melissa Rowell-Petijean to fill two vacant seats during the Tuesday work session.

They were approved during the November 6 meeting.

• Taxiway and Hanger Slab — GDOT-Aviation: Cason recommended commissioners accept funding from GDOT (Georgia Department of Transportation)- Aviation in the amount of $607,572.91 during the November 4 work session.

Cason explained the funding will pay 75 percent of the cost to build the new taxiway and slab for the first steps in getting T-hangars at the airport. The county’s match will come from the new TSPLOST (Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) totaling $200,000.

Funding from GDOT -Aviation was approved in Thursday’s meeting.

• Purchase and replacement of six roll-up doors for Nahunta and Hickox fire stations - Nahunta VFD: The county manager presented commissioners with door bids for the volunteer fire departments in Nahunta and Hickox.

Keen Garage Door of Waycross’s bid for repairs and service was $10,418.46, Roll Up Door of Blackshear’s bid for six new doors was $5,700, Overhead Door of Brunswick bid $31,890 for two new doors. Bids were for metal doors.

“Keen is just repairing the current doors with new panels and replacing the motor for the overhead door,” explained Cason. “We’re getting six new doors we would install from Roll Up Door. We already have the motor to roll up the overhead door. Overhead Door will install one door in Nahunta and one in Hickox.”

Commissioners approved the purchase of replacement Roll Up Doors at the Nahunta and Hickox VFDs during the Thursday, November 6 meeting. Nahunta requested Keen Garage Door to update current roll up doors and install six new garage door motors. The repair and service through Keen Garage Door will be $10,418.46.

• Purchase of 2004 Freightliner resuce truck — Nahunta VFD: A request by the Nahunta VFD to purchase a 2004 Freightliner, five-person cab with equipment from the Camden County Fire for $25,000 was presented during the Tuesday work session and passed during the regular monthly meeting November 6.

It will be paid from the Nahunta Fire Account.

• Naming private easement off Hwy. 110W “Henderson Hill”: Commissioners approved naming a private easement Henderson Hill off Hwy. 110 during its Thursday meeting.

The county manager explained a family has taken a plot of land, subdivided into three separate flats and need an easement to get to the back plat in the work session. “This would be for 911 purposes only,” said Cason.

“They understand we’re not going to give them an address,” asked Commissioner Brian Hendrix.

“They understand,” responded Cason.

• Purchase of SCBA’s for Waynesville Fire Department: Cason informed commissioners the Waynesville VFD requested the purchase of SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) equipment.

“A brand new one is $11,174.16,” said the county manager. “They have located 12 with the Red Hill Fire Department in Carnesville which has 12 units that was serviced this summer by 10-8 for $48,000. They’re requesting to by all 12.”

The request was approved during the Thursday meeting. Funding will by out of the 25 SPLOST.

• Georgia Indigent Defense Services agreement: Commissioners approved the annual Georgia Independent Indigenous Defense Services agreement with the Waycross Judicial Circuit Public Defender’s office during the November 6 monthly meeting.

• Surplus List with additions: The board approved an updated Surplus List including items from Sheriff Len Davis.

• Tri-County resolution: Cason explained during the Tuesday work session the resolution by Brantley County would be in support of the proposed new bypass road around the City of Waycross.

Commissioners approved the resolution in the Thursday meeting.

• New AC units for the Sheriff’s Department: Commissioners were presented three bids during the November 4 work session by the county manager to replace old, outdated AC units at the Jail.

Hall Heating and Air of Brunswick bid $86,127 for 15-ton and 20-ton Carrier units, Conley Sheet Metal of Waycross bid $116,326 for a 20-ton unit, and Air Adjusters of Brunswick bid $135,000 for 15ton and 20-ton Carrier units.

Commissioners approved the $86,127.00 bid from Hall Heating and Air during the Thursday meeting.

Funding will be from the Jail Fund account.

• New Dispatch Consoles for 911: The county manager presented two quotes for three dispatch consoles for E911 during the work session.

Xybix’s bid was $67,255 with Evans bidding $85,877.60. Cason informed commissioners he was unable to get a third bid.

“This would bring all of the consoles up to date and basically have multiple screens,” explained Cason. “Our director has no problem at all with either one.”

Commissioners approved the $67,255 bid of Xybix during the Thursday monthly meeting. The consoles will be paid from the EMS Fund.

• Special Exceptions: Commissioners approved a special exception for a beauty salon on agricultural land at 1810 Mt. Calvary Road in Hoboken during the regular monthly meeting.

They also approved a dog kennel and grooming business at 213 Walnut Lane in Hoboken.
