WAYCROSS — Mrs. Gwendolyn Ann Griffis, 79 of Waycross, died peacefully Wednesday afternoon, October 29, 2025, at Satilla Hospice House after a brief illness.

She was born in Jacksonville, Fla., to the late Walter Jordan Murphy and Kathl een Inman Rowell. A 1964 graduate of Manor High School, Mrs. Griffis made Ware County her home all of her life. She worked for more than 40 years in the nursing field, working in the operating room at Memorial Hospital, with Dr. Roger Bates and Dr. Peggy Howard before retiring in 2007 from the Ware County Health Department.

Mrs. Griffis was an active member of West Carswell Baptist Church. She loved her family and cherished each moment she was able to spend with them. She will forever be remembered for her selfless spirit and in-charge approach to everything.

Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brothers, Lawrence Peek, Homerville, and Jerry Murphy, Fayetteville, N.C.; and her sisters, Mary Sue Mixon and Janice Henck both of Jacksonville.

Mrs. Griffis is survived by her husband of 62 years, Tommy W. Griffis of Waycross; one son Robbie Griffis of Waycross; two sisters, Liz Henck of Baldwin, Fla., and Patsy Strickland (husband Henry) of Waycross; two sisters-in-law, Doris Peek of Homerville and Laurell Gillis (husband Neal) of Pearson. A bonus granddaughter, Tatum Down of Waycross; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 8 in the Chapel at Music Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Hospice Satilla, 808 Evergreen Way, Waycross, 31501 or House of Hope Waycross, 109 Thomas Street Waycross, 31501.

The family members would like to acknowledge and thank Hospice Satilla, Satilla Hospice House, and Harborview Pierce for the abundance of love and care given to our mom and wife. The work you do is amazing and we will forever be grateful.

Expressions of sympathy may be posted on her tribute wall at www.musicfuneralhome. com.

Music Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
