WAYCROSS — Preston Eugene Cox, 90, of Waycross, passed away Thursday, October 30, 2025, at his residence following an see OBITS, Page 9B extended illness.
Born in Ware County January 18, 1935, he was the son of the late Gideon Cox and Louise Chancey Cox. He honorably served his country in the United States Air Force, and later dedicated 38 years to the Ware County Fire Department, retiring with the rank of Captain. In addition to his public service, Cox was a skilled carpenter and cement finisher known throughout the community for his craftsmanship. He had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed spending his time gardening, hunting, and fishing.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by four siblings.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Barbara Dell Cox of Waycross; two children, LaVaughn Cox Woodard (Mike Chemaly) of Jacksonville, Fla., and Michael D. Thrift (Cindy) of Waycross; grandchildren, Riley Woodard (Korre), Kasey Woodard, Graci York (Dakota), and Olivia Thrift; one great grandchild, Jace Woodard; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 9 at the Music Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
A private graveside service will follow on Monday, November 10 at Kettle Creek Cemetery.
