BLACKSHEAR — Betty Jane Hughey Martin, 97, died Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at her home in Blackshear from natural causes.
Mrs. Martin was born September 21, 1928 to the late George Brown Hughey and Pansy Gaskins Hughey in Atlanta, and lived most of her life in Waycross. She retired from the Ware County Board of Education as a curriculum director. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Waycross.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a son, John Randall Martin, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Linda Elaine Martin.
She is survived by her husband of 80 years, John R. Martin, Sr. of Pierce County; a son, George Martin (Penny) of Pierce County; daughter-in-law, Jamie Darrah of Clayton, Ga.: three grandchildren, Ashley Martin (Rabun) of Clayton, Ryan Martin (Shelley) of Evans, Ga.; and Lori Martin Taylor (Danny) of Blackshear; nine great grandchildren, Quill Martin, Sadie Martin, Brooksie Tate Martin, L. E. Martin, John Grady Martin, Callan Martin, Miles Martin, Brinton Taylor, and Mckinley Taylor; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held at Waresboro Cemetery.
