County to build new 911 center

The county is planning to build a new 911 center in 2026.

County Manager Raphel Maddox made that announcement at the 911 advisory committee meeting last week.

First discussed in July, 2024, no concrete action has been taken on building plans since then.

The 911 Advisory Committee recommended at last week’s meeting the county purchase a new 911 system, new recorder and make upgrades to its computer assisted dispatch (CAD) and managed emergency voice operations (MEVO) system.

Maddox then announced the county would be looking to build a new facility to put the new equipment in.

“We don’t want to put all that new equipment in an old building and then have to move it again once we get the new building completed,” said Maddox.

The county commission will need to look for land and building designs, cost estimates and funding sources for the new facility. Maddox said sales tax would fund the facility.

The county’s current 911 dispatch center on Pierce Industrial Boulevard is insecure and the building is dilapidated.

“If any building in the county needs replacing (the 911 center does),” said 911 advisory committee chairman Chris Wright.
