Doris Loraine Duncan Blount

Blount

WAYCROSS — Doris Loraine Duncan Blount, 94, passed from this life to Heaven on Monday, October 20, 2025.

Mrs. Blount was born in Waycross March 3, 1931, the youngest of seven children born to Ernest Guy and Annie Mae Cochran Duncan. She will be greatly missed by her family including her children, Barbara Getter, Lamar Blount (Lyn), Becky Clark (George), and Steve Blount (Susan). Her 10 grandchildren, Amy Ferrell (Bill Buckley), Richy Ferrell (Lizzie), Deborah Blount, Ellen Hake (Brian), David Clark (Elisabeth), Julie Norman (Brian), Sarah Oster (Aaron), Andrew Clark (Ariel), Duncan Blount (Komal), and Drew Blount (Joyce), all affectionately called her their “Mema.”

They will always remember a special dessert known as “Mema cake” she prepared whenever they visited her home. Mrs. Blount was also blessed with 17 great grandchildren, ages 15 years to 14 months. What a joy and delight each member of her family was to her.

Preceding her in death were her grandson-in-law, Bill Buckley, a great grandson, Henry Clark, as well as her parents and all her siblings and their spouses. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, but Mrs. Blount was the last of her generation of both the Duncans and the Blounts. She often spoke with anticipation about seeing her family members again, and always was thankful for the Christian heritage she had received from them.

Mrs. Blount was married for 61 years to the love of her life, Leon L. Blount (1927-2009), and they made their home in Pierce County in the Hacklebarney community. She was his partner in every endeavor and was truly the wind beneath his wings. She and Leon were members of Central Baptist Church where they served with the Deacon family ministry. They loved sharing delicious grapes, pecans, and vegetables from their garden with people from the church and others in the community. She also served as a volunteer for 11 years with Hospice Satilla.

After her husband’s death, Mrs. Blount moved to Baptist Village where she became reacquainted with many friends from her past and developed new friendships that enriched and blessed her life. She eventually joined the fellowship of First Baptist Church, Waycross. Though being involved in church was important to her, she believed the most significant decision she ever made was to trust Jesus as her Savior.

Mrs. Blount was known for her tender, compassionate heart and the way she nurtured and cared for those she loved. She possessed the quality of contentment even when facing a serious illness and uncertain days. She taught us that gratitude is a choice, and she made it a daily practice to show appreciation to each caregiver or family member by saying, “Thank you for your kindness.”

Mrs. Blount loved the old hymns and Southern gospel songs, and often sang with her caregiver even before rising for the day. She loved God’s Word and especially treasured the truth of God’s promise that “He will never leave us nor forsake us.” She believed that promise and often said, “I’m in God’s hands.”

Her favorite passage from the Bible was really a prayer for God’s favor, protection, and peace. Numbers 6: 24-26 says: “The Lord bless and keep you; the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.”

Mrs. Blount prayed those she loved would know Jesus personally and would one day be joined with her in Heaven. That was the heartbeat of her prayer for each family member and friend.

She was remembered in a memorial service at Miles-Odum Funeral Home, Wednesday October 22. A private graveside service followed for the family at Ben James Church.

Active pallbearers were her grandsons and grandsons- in-law, Richy Ferrell, Duncan Blount, Drew Blount, David Clark, Andrew Clark, Brian Hake, Aaron Oster, and Brian Norman.

Honorary pallbearers were her faithful caregivers, Buddie Niece, Wendy Sylvester, and Korianne Yawn, along with the staff of Nanna’s Helping Hands, led by Sandra McKelvin (Jackie Belt, Precious Elvington, Danielle Holmes, Kena McKelvin, Gloria Nixon, Maxine Robertson, Destiny Ryals, and Toshi White). Mrs. Blount’s family will be forever indebted to these gifted women for the love and care they provided in her last days.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Baptist Church Waycross or Hospice Satilla, in appreciation for the compassionate way they served Mrs. Blount with excellence over the past year and met her needs during her illness.
