Louise Barber Johns, long-time social worker and wife of former Sheriff Robert Johns, died Tuesday, October 21. She was 85.
A native of Ware County, Mrs. Johns spent 14 years as a social worker at the Brantley County Department of Family and Children Services before transferring to the Department of Corrections with Ware State Prison.
She also supported her husband, Robert, during his terms as Sheriff of Brantley County.
Mrs. Johns was an exceptional basketball player and once scored 73 points in a game. She was drafted in 1959 by Hazel Walker’s Arkansas Travelers, a professional all female basketball team, and played for one year, traveling across the United States. In recognition of her success, she was inducted into the Ware County Hall of Fame in 1998. A woman of strong faith with a servant’s heart, she was a member of Williams Chapel in Waycross and dedicated much of her life to caring for others. Never idle, she enjoyed cooking, gardening and being outdoors.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 25, from the chapel of Frye Funeral Home. Burial followed at Greenlawn Cemetary in Waycross.
