A fire of unknown origin caused about $15,000 damage to a house at 903 Sweat Street Friday, Waycross Fire Chief Jim Blackburn said.

The house was occupied at the time, but all were able to escape the dwelling, Chief Blackburn said. Blackburn said one of the three people who lived in the frame structure was sitting on the porch when a person driving by told them the house was on fire. There were no injuries.

The chief, who was just a few blocks away at the city’s dedication ceremony for improvements at Elizabeth Park, arrived on the scene at 12:04 p.m. That was one minute after the call came in, he said.

After inspecting the dwelling when the fire was extinguished, Blackburn said the blaze appeared to have started in a wall on the porch area at the front of the house. About 15 personnel were at the fire scene. They cleared the area at 2:30 p.m., Blackburn said.
